I learn something new everyday: Edwards was on Gore's VP short list
Edited on Mon May-31-04 06:11 PM by wyldwolf
But in a 2002 Tribune interview, Edwards offered a glimpse into the process when he and Kerry were on the short list alongside Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record) of Connecticut, whom Al Gore (news - web sites) selected.

"They sent the private investigators all over North Carolina, doing what private investigators do, I guess," said Edwards, who also was assigned a team of seven or eight lawyers to research his family's life as well as his career as a trial lawyer. "I don't know the details. I just know that they went down there."

Later, Edwards was summoned to a private meeting with William Daley, the chairman of Gore's campaign. Trailed by the press, Edwards said he was driven to an underground garage in the U.S. Capitol. He was whisked away in a different vehicle and proceeded to Daley's apartment in Washington for a two-hour Saturday morning meeting.

3. I remember Edwards being on the "short list".
I also remember being excited by him--even then. He was not a long time office holder--he'd not been in the Senate very long at that point--but he was SO magnetic. I remember several people discussing him as the atidote to the "boring Gore" spin.

I still think Gore would be in the White House today had he chosen ANYBODY but Holy Joe.

5. I swear Lieberman "threw" the VP debate with Cheney
Joe kissed Dick Cheney's ass so hard, one would have thought he was interviewing for a job at Halliburton or Carlyle. After that debate I feel almost as disgusted by Lieberman as Nadir or ZigZagZell.

7. so there WAS something to that SNL skit!!

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/02/02hmono.phtml

Al Gore V/O: I had started out with twenty possible running-mates.. and, by July, I had narrowed it down to three.

< dissolve to Gore standing before Edwards, Kerry and Lieberman inside the beach house >

Al Gore: Senators Edwards, Kerry and Lieberman. I want to thank you all for agreeing to spend six weeks with me here in Malibu with me.

Sen. Lieberman: This house is so beautiful!

Al Gore: Only one of you will be chosen. But know in your hearts, that you are all very special politicians.
