Letter to the editor and my response...
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 10:29 PM by last_texas_dem
Hello fellow DUers! Just thought I'd post one of the dumber recent letters to the editor in my local paper and the response to it that I just sent a couple hours ago. It's not one of my best letters, but I still felt like I had to send it. There wasn't really much I could say to the initial writer's "logic"...
BTW, the letter-writer I am responding to was responding to someone who responded to a letter HE wrote! It's a bit confusing...

Original letter: Critic must have forgotten deaths from terrorist attack

In The Enterprise dated July 30, you printed a letter written by Melba McFerrin Shirley of Nome.
Shirley wrote, "Nate Rogers, ask your honorable president what we are doing over there in a foreign country? Using our young soldiers for target practice. Is this what he (Nate Rogers) had in mind when he supported Bush? He (Rogers) just doesn't seem to get it."
I respect every person's right to express their opinion. However, I don't respect Shirley's opinion. It is ludicrous.
I do not need to ask President Bush what we are doing in Iraq. I know why our troops are there. It's quite obvious Shirley doesn't. Apparently she has forgotten the 3,000 innocent Americans who were killed by terrorists, in New York, on Sept. 11, 2001, the worst tragedy to ever occur on U.S. soil.
Obviously, she doesn't remember there have been no more Americans killed by terrorist attacks in the U.S. since then.
Shirley said she has the answer: "send President Bush to Iraq and send all our soldiers home." I say to Shirley, "Thank God our president doesn't have Shirley's mentality."
Can you possibly imagein what life would be like in the United States if President Bush had not taken the action he took to protect us from further attacks by the murderous terrorists?
It's very obvious that Shirley is the one who doesn't get it; it is not I.
You owe President Bush one heck of an apology.

(Apologies for anyone rolling hysterically on the floor and/or needing to clean up vomit after reading that nonsense...)

Here is my response:

In a recent letter, Nate J. Rogers claimed letter-writer Melba McFerrin Shirley, who questioned George W. Bush’s motives in involving America in conflict with Iraq, didn’t “get it” and stated that he didn’t “respect” her “ludicrous” opinion.
I can only wonder how much “respect” Rogers feels his own opinion deserves, considering the only justification he makes for attacking Iraq is based on a false premise: the September 11, 2001 attacks. Rogers apparently mistakenly believes that Saddam Hussein engineered those attacks, Iraqis flew the planes into the buildings, or that somehow Iraq was behind 9-11, because he otherwise offers no proof of any connection between the two events.
By the way, there is still no solid proof linking Saddam Hussein or Iraq to the September 11th attacks; just as there is still no solid proof of Iraq possessing “weapons of mass destruction.” Unfortunately, the truth hasn’t stopped “Dubya”, apparently a compulsive liar, from attempting to assert both allegations, and many other falsehoods, as facts at every possible turn; nor has it stopped his various right-wing minions from unquestionably swallowing and spreading his nonsense.
Rogers also informed Shirley that she “owe<s> President Bush one heck of an apology.” That is a ridiculous statement to make. If anyone needs to apologize, it is Mr. Rogers for distorting the facts in asserting a link between the 9-11 attacks and Hussein’s Iraq. Bush excels at spreading misinformation and propaganda as is; he doesn’t need further assistance.

1. I like your response
But why do you have the last couple of sentences crossed out?

3. Weird...
haha I had brackets [] on the "s" at the end of the word "owes" and the site apparently read that as me wanting to cross out those parts! Kinda funny...

Fixed it.

2. I might add
That her contention that no Americans have been killed in terrorist attacks since 9/11 is demonstrably false.

7 Americans were killed in a bombing in Saudi Arabia this spring.

6. Good point
I thought the writer's implication that because of * and his warmongering that our country was so much safer since the 9-11 attacks was so incredibly insane that I didn't even touch on that part of the letter!

4. Wonderful response, but please - edit your name out.
Anonymity is important - we live in dangerous times. Outstanding response, thanks for reinforcing truth through words. :)

7. Vanity kick
I'm off to study, but I figured I'd give this one a good kick just to keep it floating a little longer.
