Well, it's official. The prison abuse scandal is over.
It's like the 5th or 6th story mentioned on every news run-down, if they mention it at all.

Everything is about terra, terra, terra, chemical weapons, Al Qaeda cells, exploding Al Qaeda membership, Iraqi weapons scientists, etc., etc., etc.

Even the Amnesty International report is being used to tout danger, danger, danger at every turn.

1. The real big story is Chalabi's connection to Iranian intelligence
and the CIA's charge (which is reported very diligently in the UK Guardian) that neocons and the Bushists were used by Iraq to topple Saddam so Iran wouldn't have to. The terror alert stories are the Bushists' way of trying to keep this disastrous (for them) news story out of US papers as long as they can. The NY Times and Washington Post are obliging them today, but if Chuck Hagel and Senate Dems are calling for an investigation, they won't be able to hold back much longer.

Top right story (double wide, BIG headline font) on the cover of the nytimes....

Abuse of Captives More Widespread, Says Army Survey
By DOUGLAS JEHL, STEVEN LEE MYERS and ERIC SCHMITT

Published: May 26, 2004

WASHINGTON, May 25 — An Army summary of deaths and mistreatment involving prisoners in American custody in Iraq and Afghanistan shows a widespread pattern of abuse involving more military units than previously known.

The cases from Iraq date back to April 15, 2003, a few days after Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled in a Baghdad square, and they extend up to last month, when a prisoner detained by Navy commandos died in a suspected case of homicide blamed on "blunt force trauma to the torso and positional asphyxia."

It's just the beginning....

4. Not ALL wrong. With this phony new terror alert the Bush fascists
have cooked up, they are trying their damnedest to move the story off the front pages. Will the complicit media help them? You bet your ass they will. Just a matter of time.....

14. Interestingly
when I googled to find that story (Iraq prison abuse) I had to scroll down about 25 stories to find one from today in a US publication. When I googled "terrorist threat summer", almost every story was from a US publication, and there were tons of them. It also showed up on other places like radio station websites, etc.

Good for the NYT for putting it on page one, but you can't deny that the US media is largely allowing the terrorist threat story to push the prison torture scandal into the background.

3. NY Times website
the abuse story is number one on page one ...

here's a link to the story (free registration required): http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/26/politics/26ABUS.html?hp

still, i agree that our media have the attention span of a flea ... we can't be worrying about all that Iraq stuff ... bush just told us terrorists are in our country and will attack us this summer ...

again, no evidence is presented ... again, the media do no investigation ... they just spread the administration's words ... the NY Times apologized (well, sort of) for their shoddy reporting on the WMD story ... they explained that their editors just accepted the lies that Judith Miller (they didn't name her) told them ... and yet, here we go again ...

the American media are failing this country ... we cannot have a press that fails to comment on the administration's motives for releasing information ...

bush needs to shift the focus away from Iraq and back to terrorism ... his Iraq policy has created tens of thousands of new Al Qaeda recruits ... so, as his polls fall to dangerous new lows, here comes our fourth estate shouting his warnings from the roof tops ...

the American media are totally pathetic ...

9. "...our [sic] media have the attention span of a flea " ???
They were trashing both Clinton and Gore for eight years with their lies. Nothing distracted from their evil anti-democratic (note little "d") task.

There is a long list of other Dems who got that kind of treatment also. With them, "our" media were more like a swarm of crazed hornets.

7. Terra Threats may help Dem's
We need to start making the argument that Bushco said we would be safer by invading Iraq. All he did - and the threats evince - is take a baseball bat to a hornets nest. Now all of "them" are after "us".

8. And the funniest part of it, ( or most pathetic moment )
was Rumsfeld saying that they never considered that there would be armed opposition to the US occupation a year after the invasion. Who knew they would hate us so much? This folly goes beyond hubris.

You are so right DU9598: this will help the Democrats.

15. Did you really think this was going to last 5 months???
Bush and Rove know it won't. If we are counting on this to depose George (you know, remain silent and let him self-destruct thinking), it ain't gonna happen. There will be prosecutions. Oh, there will even be some brass nailed. Yawn. Anything else new on Teeeveeee??? Only the faithful remain disturbed. You see, one thing Americans do better than any other nation on earth: They Move On!!!....otherwise known as being stupid and apethetic. So, unless, something else breaks, oh, about October 25th that knocks the socks off of Bush, he's going to go strong, pick up steam and try to roll over Kerry on the way to his next 4 more years. I'm waiting for a game plan...and waiting....and waiting..........
