He was on trial for some act of hooliganism and defended himself with some legal argument about Admiralty courts that I didn't understand. Sounds like some of the same language is used on this page.

None of these activists who claim the income tax is illegal ever make a straightforward argument that a layman can understand. That makes me suspect them. There may have been some irregularities about the passage of the income tax, but it is so thoroughly ensconced in the legal system that there's little chance it will be ruled unconstitutional, even by a court full of Scalias and Thomases.

And I wouldn't recommend anyone trying this strategy, at least not until you have a law degree and enough experience to appreciate it.
