because if he did fall off the bike, why lie and say it was because of the rain-soaked soil? Just tell the truth.

More likely, he WAS on a bike. He was hammered. He took a spill. They couldn't exactly tell that truth, now could they?

29. I am inclined toward
the seizure theory myself. I think he did not fess up to his condition. I think he experiences temporary seizure (petite Mal) perhaps due to his cocaine and alcohol abuse and that is when he realized that life for him had to change. I think the two bruises that he has had were probably due to this condition. They do not represent incapacitation but hiding them from the public represents lying about a personal matter sort of like a blow job.

43. Interesting that "The West Wing" did a story line that's somewhat relevant
Where President Bartlet voluntarily temporarily stepped aside and gave up as duties as President because of his incapacity (due to MS)

You could argue that if there's even a shred of evidence about Bush having seizures, that the subject of incapacity might be brought up.

It is true that he suffers from MS he never stepped aside because of it. He was censored by Congress over it but always stayed in office. It was when his daughter was kidnapped that he voluntarily gave up the office until she was safe.

53. That explains the need for the mouthguard, too.
And the pretzel incident. And the 2 pills/day. I think there are legitimate stories about Bush having a small seizure. And then there was the "talking in tongues" episode.

Perhaps the jogging was also a problem that triggered seizures.

If this is the case (and I'm not familiar with bikers using a mouthguard, I don't use one), then perhaps this is a serious medical condition that the American people needs to know about.

90. All seizures are "temporary"
Edited on Tue May-25-04 09:02 PM by loyalsister
petit mal literally means "not very bad" or minor seizure. It used to be a clinical term used for seizures where a person did not experience major convulsions. Now such seizures might be called partial complex or something. While what used to be called "grand mal" is now called tonic clonic.
I think he experiences temporary seizure (petite Mal) perhaps due to his cocaine and alcohol abuse and that is when he realized that life for him had to change.
The seizure theory is very disparaging to those who have Epilepsy. When people here start talking about it they make it abundently clear that they are not the least bit familiar. Seizure disorders can arise from head injuries or can have idiopathic neurological origin. I have been dealing with this for a long time, and know of noone who has a seizure disorder as a result of substance abuse. If you want anyone to believe this actually happens please show some documentation.
I don't by the Korsakov's syndrom. It takes massive energy and effort to be a high functioing alcoholic, which is exactly what Bush would have had to have been these past 4 years if he had Korsakov's.

Tucker's outburst in response to Paul's valid point about the Bush admin lying regarding rain causing Bush's bike fall was entirely inappropriate and unprofessional, and such outbursts are becoming more and more common from him.

When he can't argue a valid and true criticism of his hero Bush, or his policies, he results to ranting and raving like a petulant schoolboy.

His actions today were an embarrassment to himself and CNN.

Why was Tucker Carlson ranting and raving at Mr. Begala for pointing out the White House's lie. First thing I did when hearing this ludicrous story was to check the Weather Channel's web site for rain totals for Crawford, Texas for the past week. Instead of being outraged at Mr. Begala for telling the truth, perhaps Mr. Carlson should demand to know why this administration feels the need to lie to the American public about everything.

You may be right but I don't recall any MD's around when Kennedy got shot, or even when Reagan got shot? And somehow, I can't imagine Clinton wanting or needing an MD 24/7? There was no mention of an MD being with Clinton when he fell down the stairs at that golfer's house and ripped out his knee?

92. Kennedy's doctor was in Dallas
but was in a car at the back end of the motorcade - not that it would have done any good to be closer.

I used to work with a guy whose wife was a nurse at the VA hospital here. Whenever the president (at the time it was Carter and Reagan) is in town, VA had an area on standby as did every hospital along the president's itinerary. I saw Carter when he was in Minneapolis once and there was a paramedic ambulance parked on a blocked off street, motor running. The medics were standing outside it. I learned from a friend at Hennepin County Medical that it was there "just in case". As the hospital closest to where the president was speaking they also had an area in their ER reserved.

Edited on Tue May-25-04 09:23 PM by DoYouEverWonder
the President was in a vulnerable situation because they were in public. W was relaxing in the secure confines of his own ranch.

However, you mentioned Kennedy, and I do remember that he probably did have a staff MD, because he had some pretty major health problems.

100. Kennedy had Addison's Disease...
which is a pretty serious endocrine problem. I can understand why he might have had a doctor around when he was out and about.

But Bush is supposedly in 100% top shape--a real athlete, they say. Never mind that by just looking at him you can see that's laughable, but why would he need a physician following him around 24/7?

My theory: Either a seizure disorder or intractable alcoholism.

But I don't think he was bike riding. The reason for me is that he has scrapes on his right palm. You ALWAYS wear gloves when you ride. Yes, there are dufus brains out there who ride without ANY protective gear. But they don't have a staff of 14 people protecting their personal well being. Korsakoff's syndrome

Definition

Korsakoff's syndrome is a memory disorder which is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1, also called thiamine.

Description

In the United States, the most common cause of thiamine deficiency is alcoholism. Other conditions which cause thiamine deficiency occur quite rarely, but can be seen in patients undergoing dialysis (a procedure used primarily for patients suffering from kidney failure, during which the patient's blood circulates outside of the body, is mechanically cleansed, and then is circulated back into the body), pregnant women with a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum (a condition of extreme morning sickness, during which the woman vomits up nearly all fluid and food intake), and patients after surgery who are given vitamin-free fluids for a prolonged period of time. Thiamine deficiency is an important cause of disability in developing countries where the main source of food is polished rice (rice with the more nutritious outer husk removed).

An associated disorder, Wernicke's syndrome, often precedes Korsakoff's syndrome. In fact, they so often occur together that the spectrum of symptoms produced during the course of the two diseases is frequently referred to as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. The main symptoms of Wernicke's syndrome include ataxia (difficulty in walking and maintaining balance), paralysis of some of the muscles responsible for movement of the eyes, and confusion. Untreated Wernicke's will lead to coma and then death.

Causes

One of the main reasons that alcoholism leads to thiamine deficiency has to do with the high-calorie nature of
alcohol. A person with a large alcohol intake often, in essence, substitutes alcohol for other, more nutritive calorie sources. Food intake drops off considerably, and multiple vitamin deficiencies develop. Furthermore, it is believed that alcohol increases the body's requirements for B vitamins, at the same time interfering with the absorption of thiamine from the intestine and impairing the body's ability to store and use thiamine. Direct neurotoxic (poisonous damage to the nerves) effects of alcohol may also play some role.

Thiamine is involved in a variety of reactions which provide energy to the neurons (nerve cells) of the brain. When thiamine is unavailable, these reactions cannot be carried out, and the important end- products of the reactions are not produced. Furthermore, certain other substances begin to accumulate, and are thought to cause damage to the vulnerable neurons. The area of the brain believed to be responsible for the symptoms of Korsakoff's syndrome is called the diencephalon, specifically the structures called the mamillary bodies and the thalamus.

Symptoms

An individual with Korsakoff's syndrome displays much difficulty with memory. The main area of memory affected is
the ability to learn new information. Usually, intelligence and memory for past events is relatively unaffected, so that an individual may remember what occurred 20 years previously, but is unable to remember what occurred 20 minutes ago. This memory defect is referred to as anterograde amnesia, and leads to a peculiar symptom called "confabulation," in which a person suffering from Korsakoff's fills in the gaps in his or her memory with fabricated or imagined information. For instance, a person may insist that a doctor to whom he or she has just been introduced is actually an old high school classmate, and may have a lengthy story to back this up. When asked, as part of a memory test, to remember the name of three objects which the examiner listed ten minutes earlier, a person with Korsakoff's may list three entirely different objects and be completely convincing in his or her certainty. In fact, one of the hallmarks of Korsakoff's is the person's complete unawareness of the memory defect, and complete lack of worry or concern when it is pointed out.

Diagnosis

Whenever someone has a possible diagnosis of alcoholism, and then has the sudden onset of memory difficulties, it
is important to seriously consider the diagnosis of Korsakoff's syndrome. While there is no specific laboratory test to diagnose Korsakoff's syndrome in a patient, a careful exam of the individual's mental state should be rather revealing. Although the patient's ability to confabulate answers may be convincing, checking the patient's retention of factual information (asking, for example, for the name of the current president of the United States), along with the patient's ability to learn new information (repeating a series of numbers, or recalling the names of three objects ten minutes after having been asked to memorize them) should point to the diagnosis. Certainly a patient known to have just begun recovery from Wernicke's syndrome, who then begins displaying memory difficulties, would be very likely to have developed Korsakoff's syndrome. A physical examination may also show signs of Wernicke's syndrome, such as peripheral neuropathy.

Treatment

Treatment of both Korsakoff's and Wernicke's syndromes involves the immediate administration of thiamine. In fact,
any individual who is hospitalized for any reason and who is suspected of being an alcoholic, should receive thiamine. The combined Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome has actually been precipitated in alcoholic patients hospitalized for other medical illnesses, due to the administration of thiamine-free intravenous fluids (intravenous fluids are those fluids containing vital sugars and salts which are given to the patient through a needle inserted in a vein). Also, the vitamin therapy may be impaired by the feeding of carbohydrates prior to the giving of thiamine; since carbohydrates cannot be metabolized with thiamine.

Prognosis

Fifteen to twenty percent of all patients hospitalized for Wernicke's syndrome will die of the disorder. Although the
degree of ataxia nearly always improves with treatment, half of those who survive will continue to have some permanent difficulty walking. The paralysis of the eye muscles almost always resolves completely with thiamine treatment. Recovery from Wernicke's begins to occur rapidly after thiamine is given. Improvement in the symptoms of Korsakoff's syndrome, however, can take months and months of thiamine replacement. Furthermore, patients who develop Korsakoff's syndrome are almost universally memory-impaired for the rest of their lives. Even with thiamine treatment, the memory deficits tend to be irreversible, with less than 20% of patients even approaching recovery. The development of Korsakoff's syndrome often results in an individual requiring a supervised living situation. ( Like the Presidency ?)

"It's been raining a lot and the topsoil is loose," Duffy said. "You know this president. He likes to go all-out. Suffice it to say he wasn't whistling show tunes."

So it's been raining a lot in Crawford, we are told. So here's the recent precipitation levels from Crawford:

May 19: 0"

May 13: 2.79"
May 12: 0"
May 11: 0.15"
May 10: 0"
May 9: 0"

May 13th saw some serious rain, but other than some sprinkles on the 14th, Crawford saw nothing but sun. In the last week alone, the temperature was in the high 80s the entire time.
So rain on the 13th and (barely) 14th was blamed for a Bush fall on the 22nd. As everything else, it wasn't Bush's fault. Nothing is Bush's fault.

Ever.

Liars.

83. When I told My 8 year old that Bush's doctor was riding with him she said
his doctor goes on bike rides with him with her face all screwed up like I don't understand....?

Even she gets it.

88. I don't believe there was a bike
Edited on Tue May-25-04 08:46 PM by elbayl
We all know that Shrub loves to run but this is the FIRST mention of him riding a bike. C'mon if he were an avid bike rider he'd have already had a few photo ops with Lance Armstrong (being they both lived in Austin, TX).

There was no bike...

98. Think about this...Loose dirt don't cause pavement abrasions
Say the dirt was loose...then that means you were trail riding and not bike riding on pavement. Who takes their Doctor on a bike ride 17 miles. Think...Most people would say 10 miles..Or 15 miles
or 20 miles...But 17? No one comes up with an odd number like that.
So here is the scenario according to Bush.
Biked 17 miles......with Doctor.....
Have bad knees.....instead of jogging...biking....DDDDDDDDuuuuuh !
Dr. wants to bike with me because ....maybe he knows the Angel of Death is gonna fall? Why not have Benny Henn Bike with ya or Oral Roberts?
Biking? where? In the woods...dirt...or on the asphalt?
If you are on concrete, doesn't matter if its pouring down raining
no dirt on pavement. Earth does not grow in pavement...
Did the Doc bring his medical bag?
Where did he put it?
Who is the doctor who decided to give up a game of golf and go biking? That in itself would be a miracle of sorts....
Were the secret service riding bikes too?
Come on..these are good questions!

104. Thanks!
That was very informative. I never watch CNN anymore and was surprised at how Begala was holding his own. Carlson is such a whore! Note his comments about he can't pronounce the french word like the democrats can and several comments about not being able to pronounce words. Does he think its good to look as stupid as bush? He certainly has all the little slurs and insinuations down doesn't he? Agggh. And that's why I don't watch. But it was interesting to see how they are speaking up against bush and the audience applause.

Or liberals, for that matter.

As much as I hate bush, and as much as I wish he'd become even more impaired than he already is, in that fall, I have to add my two cents here-

I am an avid mountainbike rider. I will say for the record that where I ride, there are places where it is slippery and wet after weeks of no rain.

I say you people should be more careful about your reputation. Don't give repubs any kind of foothold. This administration has set up the most incredibly complex minefield of bullshit, and all we can talk about is Fuckhead's fall.

of me or of DU.

I shudder to think of spending any time worrying about such.

110. No, that's not "all 'we' can talk about."
Edited on Wed May-26-04 12:05 PM by RandomKoolzip
This is one thread among tens of thousands on this board. ON THIS BOARD! You see the registered members number? Over 40,000. Well, half of the American people think of themselves as "liberal." And there's maybe forty-five people discussing this one topic right now, out of a possible 40,000 on this board, out of a possible 2 billion people, most of whom think of themselves as liberal.

Believe me, Busch falling off a bike is not ALL they're talking about.

Again, another newbie comes on the board and tells us not to talk about a certain harmful-to-the-administration topic because it makes "'us' look bad." These newbies CARE SO DEEPLY about the Democrats' image that they're willing to issue warnings to us about tarnishing our reputations on behalf of the "great unwashed." How many times has this happened? Oh probably upwards of 200. Pal, it doesn't work. We're gonna talk about stuff, and in case you haven't noticed, Bush's poll numbers are slipping, mainly because WE on DU have had the guts to talk about stuff to the "great unwashed," and it's making a difference. So you can tell whoever orchestrates these internet disinfo campaigns you guys run to just give up, it's not an effective tactic.

I also find it interesting that one of the last infiltrators to try this tack used KERRY's owning a mountain bike against him! He said something to the effect of "Bush is a man of the people, out on his ranch, chopping wood, while elitist Massachussetts liberal John Kerry rides a 1000-dollar mountain bike." Well, guess what, schmuck: your beflightsuited savior rides an elitist mountain bike, too (and falls off of it!)

And don't address us as "you people." That kind of stuff really doesn't give freepers a good name.

111. I keep coming back to ...
why did Bushboy have his DOCTOR along bike riding with him?

Secret Service I can understand, but is he so prone to spills that he can't be let out of the house without his personal physician standing by? Oh, wait, there's that part about falling off the couch after choking on a pretzel. Maybe he isn't allowed IN the house without his doctor.

Sawmtheing eez nawt right.

Could the media be coming to its senses?

The New York Times, yesterday:

"In this case it looks as if we, along with the administration, were taken in. And until now we have not reported that to our readers."

Has the wheel finally come back around, somewhere in the vicinity of the truth?

117. I think it was a giant TREE he crashed into, not the pavement.
The wounds sustained look like Tree Damage from the rough bark. Prolly was going about 5 MPH and lost it.
