Calif. lawmaker takes dangerous stand on draft

LOS ANGELES – When Rossana Cambron, a special education teacher from Whittier, Calif., saw Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) on a local Spanish-language television program April 30 speaking favorably of a military draft, she got mad. Becerra thinks this could prevent disproportionate numbers of minorities and poor suffering military casualties, and with more affluent youth at risk opposition to war would be overwhelming, said the aide.

-snip-

However, a number of recent developments have made peace activists concerned about such a stance. On May 2, Hearst newspapers reported that a 2003 report of the Selective Service System (SSS), which administers the peacetime preparation and wartime activation of the draft, proposed changes to the draft that would extend the draft age to 34 and include women.

The next day, former Marine Jack Martin, chief financial officer of the Department of Education, was appointed as the new SSS acting director. Martin, an African American, is a longtime Bush ally. Among the priority goals of SSS this fiscal year are recruiting volunteer teachers in 85 percent of the nation’s high schools as “registrars” and improving “overall draft registration compliance.” The SSS also aims to be fully operational within 75 days of a congressional order for “an authorized return to conscription.”

-snip-

Peace activists in Becerra’s district are urging opponents of the draft to call Becerra’s Washington office (800-839-5276) and ask him to oppose the draft and work to bring the troops home. They will also bring their concerns to the congressman at a community forum he is holding in his district May 22.

1. It's a stupid baker's dozen
I support the draft. Send the trust-fund brats off to Iraq and the war would be over tomorrow.

fund brats over. There's little chance, or hope, that any such draft could be fine-tuned or engineered sufficiently to allow for this. And since that appears to be the case, I'm against a draft PERIOD. There's no way to guarantee that it'd be fair, and that if Joe Six-pack's son had to go, the bush daughters would have to go, too. If there were, it might be easier to support. But it isn't. So I don't. Can't. Won't.

2. Has Kerry said no draft?
I know he said not under "current circumstances" but things have gotten worse lately.

4. Kerry says "No Draft" to 130 College Editors and has a plan to avoid it
Kerry just told 130 college editors in April "NO DRAFT". Kerry's NO-DRAFT plan is to raise 40,000 additional troops and avoid reinstatement of the draft is added up this way:

1. Move some paper-pushers to combat (lots of potential there)
2. Increase enlistment with real scholarships and pay raises
3. Let troops know Special Ops will hunt al-Queda, no more invasions needed, so re-up rate goes up. "Primarily a law enforcement effort, not a full military effort", say JK.
4. Start a "Civilian Stability Corps" that would help in reconstructing Afghanistan and Iraq and relieve military pressure.
5. GET FOREIGN TROOPS TO COME INTO INSTEAD OF LEAVE IRAQ!!

http://www.candidatemap.com

"...I propose that we enlist thousands of them in a Civilian Stability Corps, a reserve organization of volunteers ready to help win the peace in troubled places. Like military reservists, they will have peacetime jobs; but in times of national need, they will be called into service to restore roads, renovate schools, open hospitals, repair power systems, draft a constitution, or build a police force. A Civilian Stability Corps can bring the best of America to the worst of the world—and reduce pressure on the military."

With this NO-DRAFT PLAN, Kerry will not have to resort to conscription, even after Bush screwed the whole thing up.

From STOPTHEDRAFT.COM

What do a former fighter pilot in the National Guard and a former officer in the Navy have in common? Both have promised not to reinstate the military draft if elected president.

Senator John Kerry has promised that if elected president he will not reinstate the military draft, but will increase troop numbers by 40,000.

President Bush and his staff have also promised the American public that there are no plans to reinstate the military draft.

-snip-

John Kerry wants to deploy 40,000 more troops to Iraq and finish the job quickly. Yet when asked how he would do it, he said that a draft is not needed and people will enlist. This approach seems rather naïve and overly optimistic.

To his advantage, however, Senator Kerry was an anti-war activist after serving his duties as a Navy officer in the Vietnam War and knows first-hand the pitfalls of the military draft.

-snip-

KERRY KNOWS THE DRAFT IS UNEQUAL, THAT'S WHY HE'S AGAINST IT AND WHY THE DEM BILLS ARE SO DUMB. KERRY WILL USE SPECIAL OPS NOT INVASIONS TO CATCH AL-QUEDA
