Key Israeli Condemns Offensive In Gaza
Deputy Premier Says Images Evoke Holocaust Memories

JERUSALEM, May 23 -- One of the key political moderates in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's cabinet deplored on Sunday the Israel army's offensive in the Gaza Strip, saying television images reminded him of the suffering of his family during the Holocaust.

In stark and emotional language, Deputy Prime Minister Yosef Lapid, who also holds the Justice Ministry portfolio and is a Holocaust survivor, told Israeli radio that the country risked further international condemnation if the army continued its campaign of pursuing Palestinian gunmen, demolishing homes and expelling civilians from the heart of the populous Rafah refugee camp.

"On TV I saw an old woman rummaging through the ruins of her house looking for her medication, and it reminded me of my grandmother who was thrown out of her house during the Shoah," or Holocaust, Lapid said in a radio interview after the weekly cabinet session.

"We look like monsters in the eyes of the world," he added. "This makes me sick."

3. This is heartening!
Deputy PM, is he a Likud? That there'd be such dissent in the Likud party would be even better news, but I'm glad to hear it from anyone in the Israeli power structure.

People are starting to open their eyes to Ariel Charon, Prime Minister of the River Styx.

5. I was so pleased to read this. As a Jew, I sometimes find
myself in lonely territory (and being attacked by pro-Likud Jews, even here at supposedly progressive DU) when protesting the actions of the Sharon government, so it pleases me to see others speaking up. I've also noticed that Eric Alterman has taken off the gloves too, and has been routinely attacking the neocons, and the Likudnazis.

To survive as a state, Israel must, as we must here, remove their corrupt and fascist government as quickly as possible. If a majority in Israel continues to support Likud, and its policies, no one will cry for them when THEIR children are killed. Indeed, the world has reached its limit with respect to the war crimes of both the Sharon, and the Bush administrations.
