But keep in mind, this site is a Libertarian stalking horse. It's based on the old "World's Smallest Political Test", authored by David Nolan in the 1960s when he was forming the Libertarian Party.

Edited on Mon May-24-04 06:13 AM by Lucky Luciano
Fiscal policies - 59 - Centrist
Non-Fiscal Policies - 15 - strong liberal

The test is obviously lacking in many ways....but this is the best they can do for a short test, I suppose that is not based on current foreign policy issues.....if they had questions about Iraq in there, then I would be swinging away at this folly we are in - by swinging away at this, it would probably increase my fiscal number to 74 or so and reduce my non-fiscal number to about 8 or 9.

I have to admit, on several of the questions, I ended up taking one answer over another when I really liked a combination of two answers, but then, a multiple choice quiz is not generally a vehicle of nuance!

I thought there were some very real weaknesses with this test ... for example, the question on farm subsidies didn't come even close to offering me a good choice ... corporate consolidation in farming is a genuine evil but there wasn't a choice to address this problem ...

Where was the "subsidies have a role in protecting small/family farms, but too much of it these days is corporate pork, so they need to be thoroughly reviewed and overhauled to do what they're supposed to do" choice?

And any number of questions lacked similar shadings.

55. Well said !!
and the "flavor" of the questions focussed too much on "how much government "INTERFERENCE" should be allowed" ... there never seemed to be any presence in the questions that, for example, asked whether the nation is being put at risk by "over centralizing" (i.e. putting all your eggs in one basket) the food supply ...

the entire survey lacked an appreciation for the risks inherent in defective policies ... it couldn't "see beyond" the laissez-faire, free market versus government control arguments ... and there's far more devils in the details on that spectrum than meet the eye ...

29. Why is the other one 'lame'?
Remember the political compass test is designed to be answered internationally, not just by Americans (and the questions in this test aren't always very applicable outside the USA). I get roughly the same results on both, though the American test calls me a bit more liberal fiscally (probably because the American fiscal centre is to the right in most developed countries).

What was your score in the political compass test?

there's no way you can be on the left hand side if you don't support universal health care. You also need to support a welfare state that keeps paying the unemployed even if they've been out of work a long time.

Democrats in this country are mostly very pro-business and that differs a great deal from many politicians in other developed countries. I mean Italy gets communist party members elected to parliament!! Green parties do ok in Europe. That would never fly here!

I actually prefer the other one to this one, frankly... though I'm not fond of political quizzes in general, the questions and answers are often vague and very complex issues are boiled down to a few choices.

Interestingly, I never really considered myself a liberal until I arrived at DU. I always thought I was a moderate. I knew that republicans categorized me as "liberal," but then, anything not sticking to the wall on the extreme right is liberal to them.

It's been conversations here at DU with actual democrats, a rarity in my town, that has revealed me to be a liberal!

I'm not convinced, though, that the econ questions offer a legitimate range of responses. I don't believe that fiscal conservatism, for instance, means that taxes should be low. Rather, it means that taxes should be at a high enough level for gov't to fulfill its financial needs and meet already standing obligations to its citizens.

That term has been hijacked by those who just want lower taxes and it's got little to do with economics. It's got everything to do with supposedly small gov't, and has been neoconned into meaning deficit spending.

62. Good Analysis
Edited on Mon May-24-04 05:02 PM by Lucky Luciano
This is what I noticed as well. One of my absolute number one priorities is getting out of debt. That is why I rated so high on fiscal policy at 59. This should make me very fiscally conservative, but no doubt the very fiscally conservative people are the ones who checked off the box that said they were all for deficit spending - quite ironic, if not blatantly false I think.

117. Yep - I am an admitted capitalist
It is just that I do not have enough humility to allow someone to be my boss unless they can be a mentor that will teach me how to be at their level or higher. I like being the boss I guess.

BTW, I voted in favor of allowing guns on the quiz too, but highly regulated. I worry with b*sh in power - if more like him continue to come into power, our civil liberties will be totally stripped away and we may need those guns some day to protect ourselves from the government! Sheesh! I never thought I would sound like one of those anti-government people holed up in Montana!!! It could happen if things continue like this for 15-20 more years! For now, I will not worry too much unless b*sh wins the election. I only shot a gun once. I was visiting the Cu-Chi tunnels national historical museum in Vietnam and they had a firing range. I shot 10 rounds of an AK-47 for a buck a bullet. I kind of liked it. That guns has some serious kick to it. I am physically well built, but it took a couple rounds to learn the stability - even then I definitely did not have it down. I did hit the target 100 yards away 4 times.

98. This test is flawed -- it doesn't check liberal or conservative at all
For instance, the question which asks about federal funbding for education: does it matter if the decision on how to spend the money is made at local, state, or federal levels, in regards to "liberalness"? And drug policy, regardless of being a liberal or conservative, is way across the board, regardless of being a liberal or conservative.
