5,500 Iraqis Killed, Morgue Records Show

BAGHDAD, Iraq - More than 5,500 Iraqis died violently in just Baghdad and three provinces in the first 12 months of the occupation, an Associated Press survey found. The toll from both criminal and political violence ran dramatically higher than violent deaths before the war, according to statistics from morgues.


There are no reliable figures for places like Fallujah and Najaf that have seen surges in fighting since early April.

Indeed, there is no precise count for Iraq (news - web sites) as a whole on how many people have been killed, nor is there a breakdown of deaths caused by the different sorts of attacks. The U.S. military, the occupation authority and Iraqi government agencies say they don't have the ability to track civilian deaths.

I think that the Iraqis are better off without Saddam, but Bush & Co must come in a close second to him. The "Aren't the Iraqis better off?" argument is patronizing, suggesting that they couldn't have gotten democracy until we installed it by force, and ignores the numerous idiotic mistakes this administration has made. A good retort to it is, "And imagine how much better off they'd be if Bush had listened to his generals, the experts, and actual Iraqis, instead of just his sponsors and focus groups." I cannot wait until Sen. Kerry leads us out of this mess that Bush has misled us into.

If we had spent $200 billion dollars in one year in California, do you think it would have helped California? That's how much we have spent in Iraq. So they should be better off but it is very doubtful - since most of that money has been spent on incarcerating and/or killing them...
