Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley has asked the Pentagon to explain why it continues to use camouflage fabrics recently found to contain prohibited toxins, according to a letter obtained by CNN that was dated Tuesday.

Grassley, a Republican, took on the issue last week to show support for a civilian whistle-blower who filed suit in 2003 after discovering the prohibited use of lead-based paint and other chemicals in military camouflage material that is used in tents, tarpaulins and other canvas coverings.

On Tuesday, Grassley sent a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to ask why the Pentagon hasn't ended its contract with BondCote.

Bondcote uses a variety of chemicals to coat its fabrics for military use. But the Army prohibits the use of lead chromate, which can cause cancer and respiratory problems.

The criminal investigation started after Keith Ayers, whose company provided pigments and dyes to Bondcote, filed a whistleblower lawsuit saying that Bondcote put American soldiers at risk by using lead chromate.

our troops are/will be sick when they come home, if they come home.

Rummy knew about this!

1. This really ain't news
This sort of thing has been going on forever. Remember Gulf War Syndrome?

I get sick unto death of people who scream "support the troops" while they send them into danger, with no idea or care if they come home, or if they come home healthy. And if it they don't, well, it ain't our problem.

I am so anti-military it's almost a joke. But I'm pro-troops. And they deserve better. So much better. But they won't get it.

May God forgive us.

Khash.

2. As an aside
Grassley could have voted yes on the unemployment extension, but didn't. So much for empathy. Dana ; )
