Solace for those uncomfortable with Kerry
Edited on Tue May-18-04 08:23 PM by troublemaker
Every four years we see the spectacle of candidates hopping around and contorting themselves trying to please everyone. But why does anyone care what Kerry's positions are on anything?

There's always a lot of, "I will only support Kerry if he comes out for x, y and z."

Doesn't that presume a correlation between what candidates say on the stump and what they do in office? If there's anything we Americans should have gotten through our heads long ago it's that stuff people say during campaigns has minimal relevance to what happens afterward. (Remember that humble foreign policy we were all promised?)

So support the poor guy now, and without reservation. If by some miracle he wins then we can all hassle him about what *actions* it takes to earn our vote in 2008. (The reason we'll be able to hassle Kerry is because we won't be in concentration camps. I've never lived in a concentration camp, but I'll bet the general conditions make it harder to work for a progressive agenda.)

PS Nothing in this post is intended to support or disparage any given policy. (I know for a fact Kerry will not sign on to any of my top priorities at any point.) Just a daily dose of brutal realpolitik; the horrible but winning kind that's allowed the Republicans to literally loot our nation's wealth.

1. I agree
He's very smart, he has passed the most terrible test of fire with flying colors, and he's a Dem. That's good enough for me, and I wish it were so with too many others.

4. I don't see your point. you seam to suggest that there is no real
difference between the shrub and Kerry and he will do what he wants anyway without regard to what he says now. To me your arguing that I should just stay home and wait for the jackbooted Nazis to come pick me up. Sorry but if Kerry doesn't believe in anything and won't stand for anything I can see no reason for voting for him at all.

5. nobody will "hassle him" after he is elected
everyone will continue to spin and distort and make excuses for him.
I want someone to prove I am wrong.

6. I do not understand this thread at all. In the first place John Kerry
is a statesman. He has risked his life for our country. He has taken up unpopular causes. He has the most liberal voting record in the Senate. He is a respected environmentalist (which sealed him for me eons ago.) He is very pro vet. He has a legitimate degree from Yale. He is compassionate. He has a fabulous wife, who tells it like it is. How many more points do I need to make? He actually speaks proper English. He will do all he can for health care reform. He will be a strong leader who includes the world in his actions. He will help Africa with aids (not just do a photo op like Georgie Porgie.) Oh, and most importantly of all, he is NOT George Bush, who appoints right wing idiots for judges and for Secretary of Defense, Attorney General, Vice Pres, etc. He will give tax breaks to the middle class and not the richest of the rich. He will reduce the deficit, which seems to be the albatross all Dems get left with. I could continue, but I won't; you get my drift. It makes me mad when Dems threaten to stay home. That is just what the Bushies hope will happen.
