we need to have a national boycott...if one day doesn't make an impact...we can do this collectively again and again.

Money is all they understand. Let's meet them on their own turf.

4. Not really discredited, though, is it?
He's just saying that it didn't work as well as planners thought, and that only long-term boycotts would really affect the price.

So what? Why not do it anyway?

23. I agree
If you decide to try to, as much as you can, cut back on your gas use that day as well as not purchase any that day it sends a message.

It's probably true that a long-term boycott would be necessary, but so what? For people who need to get to work and so forth, it would be difficult to completely boycott gas, but people sympathizing with it could certainly cut back on their gas usage - with gas prices the way they are, something they will probably want to do anyway.

24. Why bother? It doesn't make good sense. It is a hoax.
Drive less, pay some attention to tire inflation, consolidate your minor errands, carpool, make certain your vehicle is in good repair.

Perhaps you live in a place affording efficient and accessible public transportation. Some people do not.

That campaign didn't work at all the first and second and on and on. We have seen all logical reasons why it couldn't. You can do a long-term boycott, but you must make sure you are actually willing to give up the things to which you have become accustomed.

I would rather save my statements for something that will matter. I need gasoline sometimes.

3. It might make a difference if everyone didn't DRIVE on that date...
Edited on Mon May-17-04 01:15 PM by NeonLX
...but not buying gas on a particular day won't hurt the "oil companies"--just maybe the local retailer. If people are still driving, they're still gonna have to fill the tank sooner or later. Doesn't matter to the oil companies what day you fill the tank, just that you use up the gasoline and have to refill. So what if it's on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday?

5. I have to drive...
I have to catch my flight at the ATL airport to go out to Vegas for my 21st birthday. Sorry, no matter what I believe, I still think having a good time for your 21st takes precedence. ;)

8. Exactly.
I doubt enough people would even heed such a boycott to surpass normal fluctuations of daily gas sales, anyway.

9. I once got an email with a slightly different plan that worked better.
It included a list of oil companies who didn't purchase raw crude from Iraq, and they said to only purchase gas at those.

Sorry I don't have that info anymoe, but perhaps concentrating on certain oil companies for a boycott would work better. Like Exxon because of Condi's connection.

12. May 19th? Why not the entire Memorial Day week-end?
Stay home and learn more about your family. Discuss current events with your spouse and children or your significant other. Stay away from the malls and Wal-Marts. If you really want to make a statement...make a HUGE statement.

13. It doesn't work to boycott one day
Because the oil companies don't live on profits day to day. And if you don't buy on May 19th, that means you'lll have to buy the day before or the day after--sometime that week you will be buying gas.

Boycotts work by avoiding a corporation for a long period of time.

Want to make a difference? Why not STOP buying from Chevron/Texaco who posted 33% increase in profits this quarter (even though gas prices are up). Then send them a letter explaining why you are going to Shell/76/Arco.

Then in 2 months everyone can shift to the next big oil company sucking our money away with the same intent. Take away the profits.

Why not purchase a car that is more fuel effcient.

Why not walk/bike/carpool/public transport to work.

19. That's why I suggest we boycott the entire Memorial Day week-end!
No shopping, no driving, no gasoline. If just half of the country did that for one big holiday it would send a message to the administration. They would at least know the power of our numbers and may even change some of their plans.

14. So, um, won't their business just double the next day?
Sounds like this will only be symbolic and won't "punish" anyone.

Why not encourage everyone to get a small fuel efficient car? That would make a huge difference.

15. How or what do you think the problem is?
I'm kind of sick and tired of people jumping up and down about the price of gas when those same people refuse to do anything to help conswerve gas by purchasing fuel efficiant autos. Maybe you are one of those who already has a fuel efficiant auto, I have no idea, but so many ppeople also refuse to understand that the US and other countries requirements for petroleum continues to rise while no additional oil has been discovered for a period of about 15 years. (maybe a little longer) The continued need to supply countries with a supply of petroleum that continues to spiral down just means that costs will continue to rise. Until we as a world community get on board and begin to understand that the days of cheap oil are long gone, we will continue to spiral down until we smarten up a little.

Remember, we still pay less for gas than we do for milk and bottled water!!!

17. If you want to affect demand, DON'T DRIVE ON MAY 19TH.
If you continue to drive, but simply choose not to gas up on the 19th, you'll simply end up having to fuel up on the 20th or the 18th.

In the end, you'll have accomplished nothing to reduce the actual consumption of gasoline. In fact, you may exacerbate the problem by creating unusually high demand on May 20th, prompting a short-term shortage and giving the oil companies yet ANOTHER lame excuse to hike their prices due to "supply problems."
