6. Hizbollah's Passion parody
Hizbollah's Passion parody

BEIRUT - The Islamic guerilla group Hizbollah is mimicking the trailer from Mel Gibson's crucifixion epic, The Passion Of The Christ, to highlight the sufferings of Iraqis under US occupation.

An official at Hizbollah's TV station, Al-Manar, said on Saturday that its version of the clip, titled The Passion Of The Iraqis, borrowed from a 'universal theme' to get its message out.

The 40-second trailer shows Iraqi prisoners' torture at the hands of coalition troops as parallel to the torture of Jesus Christ at the hands of the Romans and the Jews.

The clip starts with images of Iraqi suffering, including a coalition soldier kicking an Iraqi prisoner and a man and woman cowering in terror as troops burst into their home. The words 'No Mercy' and 'No Compassion' are flashed on the screen.

They've just changed topics. It's going to be based on his real-life family.

It's untitled for the moment, but I hope there will be subtitles so we can understand the ultra-Conservative Catholic lifestyle.

(no joke...except for the subtitles part)

14. Hype was manufactured to begin with
All the churches bought blocks of tickets, selling out theaters and making the box office look amazing.

After they ran out of churches willing to pull this stunt, it turns out the average not-highly-religious person wasn't impressed

Attendance was grossly inflated for a couple of weeks, then only the few who were truly interested attended.

44. The age of victimhood is over.
That is unless you're a konservative fundy. I'm a Lutheran and don't feel the least bit opressed. Problem is these konservative fundies have coopted the very definition of Christianity, so that if one dares to critique the religious right, it's taken as an attack on all of Christianity. These people, for all their political power do not encompass the whole of the Christian world. Far from it.

21. Did you see the South Park episode?
Hilarious.

Mel Gibson as deranged lunatic, chasing down Stan and Kenny, because they had the audacity to see the film, realize it sucked, and demand their money back.

Kyle, on the other hand, is goaded by Cartman to see the film and understand why the whole world hates the Jews for killing Jesus. Kyle then delivers an apology speech to Christianity in synagogue.

Cartman, semi-unwittingly, leads a march of neo-Nazis down the street chanting anti-Jewish slogans in German. (The crowds think they're speaking Aramaic, and what a wonderful thing it is that this little boy is so fired up about The Passion anyway! But what's with the swastika?...)

Those guys have to be stoned to think of this stuff.

29. The Sequel's Being Filmed
In this Christ returns as a cyborg with a German accent.

Or maybe Mel's busy doing up the true story of the Tao Te Ching. We've never really gotten the real low down on that one.

My bets, Mel and Dad are passed out in some religious rapture with all that money they got from the hype to this thing.

Just wait til the DVD comes out, then the Cable TV Premeier and the Network TV Premier (guaranteed to be an Easter classic in 2010) and the money machine still has a while to play out.

Nice to see Michael Moore took notes, as did Mr. Eisner and the folks at Miramax.

39. Nobody watches "Titanic" or "Independence Day" either
I saw "Titanic" on the rack at Costco yesterday for $12.79 or some remaindered price. Blockbusters come and go (mostly go), and The Passion was no exception. It will experience a small resurrection of interest when it comes out on DVD, then submerge beneath the public consciousness forever. Years from now, younger folks will ask you if there really was a lot of controversy surrounding the movie's release, and you can bore them to tears with details of the shameless marketing hype that made such a stinker of a movie the biggest draw in the land. For a while.

40. IT WAS A NON-ISSUE... What was so wrong with it?
I saw it and found it really moving at times. Any talk of it being anti-Semitic was baloney! A "mob" condemned Jesus it wasn't identified specifically as a "Jewish mob" and the "powerful and corrupt" incited the mob it wasn't emphasised that many of these powerful and corrupt men where obstensibly Jews (although historically the pharasees had a remarkbly differant belfe structure to most lay jews and there was a lot of tension between the two groups) and let us not forget that at many points in the film Jews (not just Simon of Sireen but a number at the "trial") defended Jesus, if any one was maligned it was the Romans and even then only those responsible for torturing Jesus where portrayed as brutal thugs and even then who would argue that the role of torturer or interrogator did not attract sadists to the roman army at that time and that is how it was and sometimes sadly still is.... I found the film so moving at times... and almost all the criticism about it being anti-Semitic or overly violent was unfounded and stupid.

41. What's Wrong With it? Not Overly Violent
unfounded and stupid? How long did the beating go on? 20 minutes, half hour, most of the movie?

Here's a few things that are wrong with it (from article posted above):

I laugh out loud when I see Christian groups come together to shut down "porn shops" when out of the 66 cast members of "The Passion", there are 33 that have appeared in porn or horror films.

I am merely pointing out that the piety of the film is unwarranted. With porn stars and horror film alumnus, participating in the movie it is hard to take Mel Gibson seriously.

In summary "The Passion of the Christ " is a horror movie disguised as a religious tract. It stars horror and Sci Fi actors as well as several European Porn stars "virtual unknowns" to good Christians who avoid these films.
The first thing you see when the film begins is an image of the left eye taken from an old painting of Christ. This is the image for Gibson’s film company "Icon Films." The image reminded me of the ancient Egyptian "eye of Horus" which many believe to be the "evil eye of the illuminati."

The scene opens in what appears to be a graveyard. A dark figure is praying and looking into the sky. We later learn that it is Jesus. It appears that Jesus is praying to the moon.

I found it a bit unnerving to see Christ praying to the moon when in ancient Syria and Canna, the Moon-god was named "Sin." I don’t know if Gibson knows this, but it seemed a bit much to be focusing on the moon.

From the time that Christ is betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus is beaten and eventually his right eye is punched and it swells until it is closed. In fact it remains closed throughout the movie.

This has been cited in the Old Testament as the very symbol of the Anti-Christ.

"Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened."--Zechariah 11:17

At the end of the film Christ rises naked with his profile showing one eye as well. According to Dr. Cathy Burns, author of the book "Masonic and cult Symbols Illustrated" claims that one of the symbols of the illuminated anti-Christ is a one eyed naked man on a horse.

Folks just love being terrified of this movie and what the Fundies might do the way that the establishment used to fear rock-n-roll and what it might lead the hippies to do.

Fundamentalists cross every racial, ethnic, economic and socio-cultural barrier. As Democrats and progressives we shun them at our own peril. We used to be the inclusive ones, but when African American men can leave a Fundamentalist Baptist prayer meeting wearing GOP insignia because they believes that they are the inclusive, God-fearing party and we are the party of snooty, ivory-tower intellectuals and miscellaneous drugged-out freaks, one reasonably needs to wonder how true this can still be.
