What's your take on the origins of the Jordanian VX gas?
I haven't been able to visit here much over the last few weeks as this story was emerging.

Where did these chemical weapons come from? Last I heard there was 20 tons of VX. Who is capable of amnufacturing these quantities of VX?

Thanks in advance.

Jordan recently seized 20 tons of chemicals trucked in by confessed al Qaeda members who brought the stuff in from Syria. The chemicals included VX, Sarin and 70 others. But the media seems curiously incurious about whether one could reasonably trace this stuff back to Iraq. Had the terrorists released a "toxic cloud," Jordanian officials say 80,000 would have died!

5. The version of the story I read...
Was a marvel of inference and spin. Some of the things in it were written to create and effect upon the reader. having said that, NOWHERE was VX or Sarin mentioned.

I have a feeling we did not hear much about this because it had no legs.

11. Is this more respectable?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3672891.stm

Reports of the size of the match varied markedly, from conservative estimates of 20,000 to 80,000 according to Queen Rania's office, to 250,000 according to the Jordanian news agency, Petra.

Jordanian TV reported on Monday that the authorities had uncovered the chemical plot and raided the house from which the alleged al-Qaeda cell was operating on 20 April.

During the raid, four people were killed and six others were arrested. They included Azmi al-Jayusi, who was shown on TV confessing to the plot.

12. So no VX has been found--
Al Qaeda PLANNED to detonate a chemical bomb, once they got the VX (or whatever). But when they arrested these guys, nothing was actually found?

Hmmm...

I wonder where they were planning to get it from then.

15. Some chemical was apparently found
"An official involved in the inquiry in Jordan told AFP news agency: "We found primary materials to make a chemical bomb which, if it had exploded, would have made nearly 20,000 deaths ... in an area of one square kilometre."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3635381.stm

It was a right wing talking point that said "this must be Sarin and/or VX".

7. Sorry! Did not mean to imply
that Jordan "has" VX gas, but rather that there was a plot to release VX in Amman Jordan by Al Qaida!

Sorry for the confusion!

I also heard that there was a reported 20 tons of VX among other chemical weapons found there waiting to be deployed.

Link? Don't have one-- I just thought this was "common knowledge" around here, maybe I was wrong.

6. They got it from Saddam
Newsmax says so, it must be true. :eyes:

<snip>
Laboratory tests on the poison gas smuggled from Syria into Jordan by al Qaeda terrorists earlier this month could determine whether their weapons came from Iraq, intelligence expert John Loftus said Monday.

"What they captured was a poison gas that consisted of several chemicals to be mixed together," Loftus told nationally syndicated radio host John Batchelor. "This has to be a poison gas of what they call the G-series; Sarin, Somin, Taubin and VX."

The terrorism expert noted that, "VX is the only kind of nerve gas where the chemicals could be safely mixed together in the field."

9. So no VX has been found there in Jordan?
I read an AP news story where "Jordanian officials" were estimating that 80,000 could die from the release, and that several AlQaida operatives were arrested.

This is based on what?

13. Larry Elder
The author of the story names no sources and provids no links to his story. A quick search of the main two sentences (Jordan recently seized 20 tons of chemicals trucked in by confessed al Qaeda members who brought the stuff in from Syria. The chemicals included VX, Sarin and 70 others) brings up a little more than a dozen references to this story. and most lead me to believe this guy is just not credible.

14. It couldn't possibly be VX
VX is the deadliet nerve agent in the world. How could terrorists get their hands on it? This has to be disinformation or exaggeration. I would like a CREDIBLE source for this, which rules out Newsmax.
