My understanding from Vietnam Veterans
is that they would prefer to forget what they saw and did in Vietnam. Our current part-time military is taking pictures of their attrocities so they can hang them on the wall and show their kids "what I did in the war." What kind of country are we living in? When did these idiots decide they wanted a Kodak moment of torture?

1. The MTV Generation

I guess.

The same mindset that makes criminals videotape their crimes and daredevils record their crashes.

A generation of exhibitionists ?

2. they probably thought it was funny at the time
... and they probably thought they could get away with it

we all do stupid things from time to time, but only a handfuls' fuck-ups border on international cataclysm.

3. I took a lot of pictures while in Vietnam
 I didn't talk about Vietnam for over thirty years and just now am beginning to feel it a worthy subject. I took many pictures though for some reason or another.

5. My grandfather was on Iwo-Jima and took many pictures.
I am in possession of all of them.

He would never, ever talk about Iwo-Jima. He passed away 36 years ago and since he never talked about it, we don't have his stories as part of our memories. I guess that is the way he wanted it.

6. I am sure you are better off
I would never wish for my grandchildren to experience even by words what I had to experience. Your grandfather sounds like a very caring man and I'm sure he loved you a lot. I don't think you want to know his stories.

7. I agree but I am sure he did some heroic things in what has been
called the bloodiest battle in history. I have an uncle who flew a B-15 (?)bomber (he was a gunner and shot down but survived). My great grandfather was serving in Italy during WWII and I have some of his heroic stories.

I have all of my uncles, grandfather, great grandfathers medals, bars, etc. and I wish I had all of the stories that went along with them.

I agree with your assessment. If he wanted us to know, he would have told us. He was, BTW, an incredibly caring man who loved his family.

8. I painted with a broad brush on that statement
My father took many pictures while in the military. They were of the country he flew over and the buddies he served with. They were a reminder of the things he experienced and the pain he suffered. He never spoke of his duties in the military. He was a pilot. I never asked if he fired his guns in anger. He never volunteered the information. But he talked of his friends often.

9. It time to bring back Pogo!
"we have met the enemy and he is us"
The cartoon character Pogo, created by Walt Kelly, grew up in the 50's and "what made his cartoons extra special was his fearless attacks on political figures who abused their powers."
Walt Kelly's early credits included work on pinnochio, dumbo, and fantasia. We could sure use his fine talents for our current pinnochio, dumbo, fantasyworld!
I read somewhere else that at one time he was a rallying cry for conservatives, must have been way back when there was so much mob corruption associated with dems - time to turn the tables on these corrupt theocons.
