"Torturegate"
We must not let this series of events be called anything less than torture.... not "abuse", "mistreatment" or any other watered-down euphemism.

The flouting of the Geneva convention and the use of mercenary contractors makes this thing stink!

Soldiers follow orders. Who was giving the orders???

2. That's the "Nuremburg defence"
A soldier need not follow an illegal or immoral order.

A better question - who hired the mercenaries.

Let's keeping using "mercenaries" instead of "contractors". It's the truth - and a much nastier word.

4. Discussing CoC on O'Franken Factor right now
It's the Minnesota defense, according to Franken: "Oh, golly, I don't know who's in the chain of command. We left that list at the Pentagon."

6. Enough with the "gates"
These new scandals are way beyond Watergate. Everything this administration does is worse than Watergate. So we should stop describing things this way. These are new standards being set.

10. I completely agree with this post . . .
Calling this Torturegate makes it sound cute and laughable because everything that is wrong has a "gate" appenix. This is far more serious and corrupt than Watergate and must be treated as such.

We are calling for a nationwide protest on the 4th of July asking for the removal of bush from office . . .

7. Does anyone know what the procedure is when a soldier rapes
(or is accused of raping) a citizen of a country where the military is based?

What is the reparation to the female and her family.

What are the diplomatic steps?

Does the Geneva Convention only apply to prisoners?

Are there any other international conventions that apply to mistreatment of citizens?

8. Oh but.....they weren't TRAINED to guard prisoners.....
....I heard that excuse over and over yesterday....seems to me they WERE trained as a few were already workin' in prisons here in the US....besides how F'N HARD is it to stand around and watch some prisoners...instead they were *interrogated* and methodically tortured...THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOIN'...the lameass excuse of how they weren't trained makes me wanna :puke:

The PASSION of the Occupiers is what I've dubbed this scandal!!! :evilfrown:

9. They are ALSO "Rape Rooms". See the actual military report:
Edited on Mon May-10-04 11:29 AM by Brotherjohn
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4894001/

Particularly, two sections called to my attention by Molly Ivins (http://www.workingforchange.com/article.cfm?itemid=16905):
1 - "Sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick."
2 - "A male MP guard having sex with a female detainee."
(I'm sure it was voluntary, right?)(/SARCASM OFF)

Also:
3 - "...they handcuffed their hands together and their legs with shackles and started to stack them on top of each other by insuring that the bottom guys penis will touch the guy on tops butt."

And this is just what made it to the report.

You are exactly right. This was not just humiliation and degradation. It was torture. It was rape. And who knows if anyone was killed.

What makes OUR "rape rooms" and "torture rooms" any better than Saddam's?
