California DUers, Unite! (A call to action)
Edited on Sat Aug-09-03 09:32 PM by manco
I've been thinking a lot about this recall nonsense, as I'm sure most of you have, and I have to say that I don't like it one bit. It's a right-wing coup designed to secure CA for Cpt. Chimp's re-election bid (not sure if it'll work out that way, but they'll try.) I'm sure most folks would agree with that. But instead of pecking away at our keyboards in our offices/bedrooms/wherever to chat and complain about it, what are folks here DOING about it? Admittedly, I haven't done much, if anything; but I want to. So, I propose that all CA DUers get together IN PERSON in their areas to plot and plan a course of action: protests, flier campaigns, calls, whatever it takes. I live in Santa Monica, so I'll sit down with anybody else in SoCal who's willing to get off their asses and DO something about this nonsense.

So how 'bout it, Duers? You game? PM me if you're in SoCal and interested; all others throughout the state form your own groups, and we'll coordinate statewide through DU.

On edit: DUers from elsewhere keep it kicked!

1. well
This is perfectly legal in California.

Democracy in action some might call it.

As long as you get the required amount of signatures, the next step is for the people to make the final decision.

3. Who's side you on?
A post like that seems more fitting for FR, not here.

Though legal, the recall is essentially bs. I want to organize DUers to get the word out to vote NO on the recall, and YES on Bustamante, our best chance to retain the governorship.

4. Ouch.
This is an abuse of a legal tool. There is nothing democratic about how has been implemented.

7. Perfectly legal to import and pay bounty signature-gatherers. Fine.
I'm tired of democracy to the highest bidder. This little "democratic action" is bought and paid for, and the BFEE started this little ball rolling when Enron gouged us two years ago.

I am already working against the recall. I won't let another GOP coup happen on my watch if I can help it.

12. Hi.
I'm in the 22nd district formerly of the 23rd district before the gerrymandering. Do we belong to the same club?

2. I used to live in Santa Monica.
There were many liberals there then. We banded together to stop the corporate take over of the housing industry by voting in rent control, earning the name of the Peoples Republic of Santa Monica from the Repukes. Yes, it was a flawed solution but it enabled the working class to have a few more years of affordable housing before being flushed out of our homes with laissez-faire economics.

I hope you still have some activist types left there. Tom Hayden was our Congressional Representative. I don't know who your rep is now, but Tom may be a good person to get hold of for something like this. He is very down-to-earth. Good luck.

As for my new neck of the woods, our local Dems club is trying to come up with solutions too. Unfortunately most of us are really old so it isn't easy getting active. :hi:

5. Old is a state of mind
If you've got the passion to do it, you'll find a way.

That's a good idea about Hayden, though I don't know how politically active he is nowadays. Last I saw him, he was at Midnight Special on 3rd Street (now closed) promoting his book about being Irish (forgot the title.)

6. I think he could be fired up for this.
I am sure he is having deja vu all over again about the abuses, which inspired the counter-revolution of the sixties. All he needs is a caucus.

10. Do a search for a thread started by
Cap'nSunshine (or is it separated by a space? Apostrophe or no?) He started a thread yesterday which was very positive and hopeful and is looking for people to get involved. Or, just go searching back through some of the threads on back pages.
