...because as a cabinet officer, once nominated and confirmed, he serves at the pleasure of the President.

Only the President, the vice president (maybe) and federal justices can be impeached.

Rumsfeld can be tried for crimes, and sued for (some) torts.

18. William Worth Belknap : Secretary of War

Returning to civilian life, he became Collector of Internal Revenue in Iowa and allied himself with the Republican Party, and in 1869 became Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. In March 1876, he was accused of malfeasance in office for accepting over $24,000 in bribes from a post trader seeking immunity from removal.

It is not clear whether he was aware of the arrangement or whether his wife had made the bargain and accepted the payoffs. Nevertheless, he was impeached by a unamious vote of the United States Senate, though at his formal trial the Senate fell short of the number of votes required to convict. By then he had resigned, which doubtless accounted for his acquittal.

since this misadministration of the war and peace certainly rise to the standard of high crimes and misdemeanors. The administration has intentionally withheld information and knowledge they had of these crimes.

I realize that there's too many Repubs in da House to expect impeachment. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be saying that Georgie QUALIFIES for impeachment. And if enough of those Repub House members are up for re-election this year, maybe we can convince them to impeach Bush out or get voted out themselves.

16. More of a chance than that, but not of Bush

If he tries to impeach Rumsfield, the Republicans might go along. If Rumsfield can be made the goat instead of Bush or the whole party, they would jump at the chance. It could even help Bush, who could fire Rumsfield to prevent him from testifying, then place all the blame on Rumsfield for the prison "abuses," thus NOT indicting Bush's own actions, or the invasion itself.

It could even help in Iraq, if Bush can show the Iraqis that he fired a top official over this.

This has the potential to be the end of Rumsfield, and the same potential to help Bush and not us. Bush is good at blaming others for his mistakes, and he wouldn't even need Cheney or Rove to figure it out.

Bush has reaffirmed today that he would keep Rumsfield, but he can claim new evidence was discovered at any point. Or, he can privately ask Rumsfield to resign and publicly claim he wants Rumsfield to stay, all the while leaking to Drudge (through "insiders") that he allowed Rumsfield to resign out of respect for his service to the country.

You can do anything when you are president and your friends own the media.

First Trent Lott (of ALL people) complains that they had to pull the Iraqi prisoner torture photos off an NPR or PBS web site (I forget which, but talk about humiliation). Then Rummy is summoned to Congress to testify before the Armed Services committee, like, yesterday. Then a couple of stories turn up in the press about Georgie taking Rummy to task about the Iraq prisoner torture pictures in the oval office. And now Charlie Rangel uses the "I" word?

Trent Lott finally "took a bullet" to save Georgie and was rewarded with a demotion. Are we seeing an encore?
