michael savage 'hate radio' bigotry exposed by Jimmy Carter's

tolerance.org, a Southern Poverty Law Center web project...."FIGHT HATE AND PROMOTE TOLERANCE"

-snips-

Then, in July, Savage described a caller to his new show as a "sodomite" and a "pig," and told him to "get AIDS and die" and to "go eat a sausage and choke on it." The cable news network fired him within hours.

As many as 7 million people around the country — most of them white men aged 35 to 55, according to the industry-watching Talkers Magazine — listen to "The Savage Nation" through some 330 affiliated stations. To them, Savage is a celebrity.

That Savage is also a bigot is well known. He has called inner-city victims of gunfire "ghetto slime." He refers to non-white nations as "Turd World" countries. Latinos, he says, "breed like rabbits." He regularly bashes gays and liberals.

"Savage's anti-Semitism is nothing new," said Rendall, a long-time analyst of Savage's show. "But this takes him a step beyond, into the company of neo-Nazi conspiracists like Matt Hale and Don Black. "What's most remarkable, though, is how Savage has put the blatant racism and anti-Semitism of the shortwave dial onto commercially sponsored am stations."

For their part, officials at Clear Channel Communications, after reviewing Savage's remarks about Cohen, limited themselves to a simple statement. "Clear Channel's radio stations," it said, "are operated and programmed locally based on extensive audience research."

He is beyond dreadful. I wish he had zero supporters so
he would just disappear from media all together.

1. I was always amazed at NY's WABC
There is an incredible amount of hate generated and distributed on that network.

and a Liberal viewpoint is NOT allowed.

2. He Doesn't Have 7 Million Listeners!!!
Once again, we have to fight that canard. The 7 million is a cumulative sum of the weekly audience. Since he's on 5 days a week, that average 1.4 million people.

Now, take into account Arbitron's adjustment values for multiple listeners (commuters, people working in small businesses with the radio on, etc.) and passive listeners (those coming into the business), the number is probably only about 80% or so, of that.

So, he's got 1.1 million troglodytes listening to him, not 7 million. You can apply the same math to any radio personality.

If you look at the Arbitron numbers, and added them all up, nationwide, you'd find that there are more people listening to the radio than understand English in this country.

6. Thanks for the info
I've always wondered if I'm technically a "Savage" listener if I'm AM channel surfing, hit his station to listen for a traffic report, then go onto something else.

Radio must be incredibly profitable if so few listeners can "pay" for so many RW talk show hosts. (How many male impotence and balding advertisements are really necessary?)

In Seattle, outside of NPR, between 4 and 7 PM weekdays we only have right wing talk radio available - it is suck a delight! :puke:

3. Just a reminder: His legal name is Michael Wiener
"Savage" is just a stage name. (It also makes it more difficult for people to find out that he was once health craze nut who pushed wierd things like coffee enemas)

7. So, it's all about money. They'd broadcast Hitler if it made money.
Even if all he did was call for the extermination of Jews, as long as he got listeners, and made money, they'd broadcast it. Lovely.

8. Blatant LIE
"Clear Channel's radio stations," it said, "are operated and programmed locally based on extensive audience research."

If this were true, they would not have cut off Howard Stern's 8 million white male listeners. The only "audience research" is whether they're likely to vote republican or not.

9. "Operated and programmed locally based on extensive audience research"

Apparently this rule does not apply to Howard Stern, whose only infraction (other than having little to no taste) was allowing a caller to say "nigger" before cutting him off. For that his show was yanked from something like six stations and fines were levied.

From what it sounds like, Savage has said a lot worse, only he's careful not to use those hot button words. I'd like to know what market research Clear Bullshit uses to justify this kind of programming.
