Average IQ by state and how they voted in 2000: notice a pattern here?

This chart is derived from taking the Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices of average IQ by state (Source:IQ and the Wealth of Nations) then simply applying that state's election results from the 2000 presidential election.

more..

4. What's the source for that data?
While I think it's rather obvious that most of the red staters are idiots, I find it hard to believe that the average IQ in states like Mississippi is around 85. They can't be that dumb, can they?

6. HAHAHAHAHA!!
"Note to Republicans: This chart is not as bad as it looks. The correlation of electoral votes to IQ is a loose one. There are many variable that are obviously not included. Connecticut, for example, probably has a significantly higher rating now that George Bush lives in Texas."

17. HMMM
I've found people in Texas to be smart for the most part. I was wondering why the average score was only 92 and the overall placement was 40th. They are burdened with a curve spoiler.

What a disturbingly disfunctional state that is. (no offense to anyone born there)

11. Where's the national IQ test ...
Edited on Thu May-06-04 01:17 AM by GregW
... that was applied to residents of all states to compile this data? I don't doubt the results, but feel it's a generalization or 'stretch' at best.

13. The source for that data
is IQ and the Wealth of Nations by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen.

Here's a description of this piece of tripe from one reviewer:
"This is a book that social scientists, policy experts, and global investment analysts cannot afford to ignore. It is one of the most brilliantly clarifying books this reviewer has ever read. IQ and the Wealth of Nations does for the study of human diversity and achievement among nations what The Bell Curve did for IQ and achievement in the USA. "

Conveniently, it fits all the Bell Curve prejudices perfectly. Asians have high IQs, Europeans are next, then Hispanics, then, of course, Africa.

They used highly questionable source data, and then massaged it, apparently. How else do you explain Ghana's having a national IQ average of 62?

62. Mental retardation starts at about 75, and yet the average in an entire nation is 62?

I think basing anything on this wretched work is a huge mistake.

26. Although the data and the data-gatherers are suspect.....
Edited on Thu May-06-04 10:56 AM by SoCalDem
If you did a study that showed the dollar amount and "tending" of the educational facilities in the "red-states", I think there would be some interesting things that would emerge.. In lots of the red states, football is KING..and sports , in general command a disproportional amount of revenue and attention at the schools..

I have seen firsthand, how "promising athletes" are given a "pass" on the academics.. Available funding for college is sorely lacking too, so in some ways, the people in areas where that mentality is common, could actually be "less" intelligent. (on average).. There will always be studious people, but when kids see at an early age, that intellect is frowned upon, and the only thing that matters is who scored the most touchdowns, or ran the most yards, or got the most baskets, can we really expect MOST of those kids to take academics seriously??

The real "brain-drain" we have in the US, is not the scientists fleeing (which a lot ARE), but the FUTURE scientists, engineers, linguists, etc., who are slyly being wooed over to the "cult of sport and fantasy"..

The years that these kids "lose" , in middle and high school can never be reclaimed. Lots of them "graduate", and THEN realize that they are doomed to a lifetime of mediocrity, because they were unprepared for much more than a McJob, and Friday night football at their alma mater :(

28. now, I can agree to that
The schools here in Alabama (for the most part) are seriously underfunded, due to crazily-low property taxes. We have the worst tax structure in the country. High sales taxes, low property tax.

The schools in the richest areas are doing just fine, though. Just another reason I don't understand why people vote R.

31. Wrong...from the site linked to:
"Error Correction: The source of this data is not "Wealth of Nations" as it had been attributed to us. A reader writes in and tells us he has the book (Sorry to hear that Mike) and the state IQ's aren't in it. This is a huge relief as the book is one of those race/IQ books. So we're still trying to track down the source for the IQ scores. As this is all a bit of good fun we aren't to concerned with the source. We know that Republicans are mentally impaired. If they weren't, that would just make them greedy.

Just in case anyone missed it, this page is for amusement only. For something that will seriously scare you, see the link below. "

But I do have a problem with believing that any state's average IQ could be below 90.

9. consider the sources
The book that is being used for data is very similar to the racist book "The Bell Curve." Follow the links. If you believe this data, it follows that you must accept "The Bell Curve." DU'er's, be consistent, not convenient.

nobody is making this claim. The red states also have the worst educational systems.
