My last verbal fight with my atavistic, wing-nut neighbor in Dallas
It happened a week ago today. I have tried to avoid politics with the guy on my trips back to Dallas, but he started this one. And I forget how he baited me into his little trap. He ended up by saying, "You really hate George Bush, don't you. You know that's not Christian."

I went bonkers. Yes I hate Bu$h I answered and Bu$h is no Christian, I added. "Why?," he asked.

Let's start with the war in Iraq and 725+ dead I responded.

His response? It was a breathtaking, gut-punch that I still find amazing (even from a right-wing Fundy with a rat's IQ). He said, and I quote, "Seven-hundred twenty-five dead is nothing. It's worth it for the oil alone."

Could there be many out there with this mindset? If so, have any other DUers encountered them? This guy is a member of the Northwest Bible Church, which counts as a member the attorney for Paula Jones, Donovan Campbell.

1. That, my friend...
Is no Christian, and you well know it.

Oh, were you really that surprised? C'mon. Fess up. Really?

I am not and I don't even know the guy.

6. Not a fist fight! A verbal "fight."
Besides, he owns an arsenal. Surprised? Since Vietnam, I don't do guns.

killed so that we can knock off ten cents per gallon- or not.

4. It is infuriating isn't it?
I had a conversation with a someone not too long ago (he just got back from basic for reservists) and we got into a discussion. I was asking polite questions trying to understand more in the interests of forming a better opinion on everything.

At length, my patriotism (and faith) somehow became the issue because I flatly refuse to say anything kind about Bush. I find it pathetic how so many in this country seem to think that free speech and fighting for it is OK until you say something they don't agree with, and more to the point, disagree with what our "president" is doing.

Somewhere in the last few years it seems to me that it's become OK among some people to blindy accept what's happening...and I have to ask, which is less patriotic: exercising my right to FREE SPEECH, to DISAGREE WITH MY GOVERNMENT if I so choose, or celebrating the death of many other people, some from our own country?

I think the answer is clear.

And yes, this stuff makes me really f&!@ing angry. You should've asked him how many barrels of oil a human life is worth? 5? 20? 100? I'd love to know.

:grr:

5. WTF?
I wonder how he'd feel if his son was among the 725 dead? :grr:

This guy is a member of the Northwest Bible Church

Just another "good Christian" for King George. :eyes: These people are unbelievable! They freak out if an embryo is destroyed, but they have absolutely no problem with over 725 human beings dying ... for oil! (I'd mention my outrage over their lack of feeling for the thousands of Iraqi civilians that have been killed, but what's the point? As far as their concerned, brown-skinned, non-Christian people are not human.)

10. Yeah. And his buddy D. Campbell gave Clinton hell.
All the while riding back and forth from Dallas to Washington on the Philip-Morris Gulfstream-4. Philip-Morris .. Big Tobacco .. hated Clinton. Also, don't forget that Ken Starr's law firm was P-M's outside attorney. My neighbor thought that that was all OK, too. Asshole.

Intellectually lazy people
We have become the most intellectually lazy country on the planet. People seem to forget that democracy take work. Bush is "likable" which somehow translates into "winner." Go figure.

Critical thinking must be at an all time low if people are willing to vote this guy a second term after he's made such a mess of this one.

8. I guess the 10,000 or so Iraqis don't count as humans, eh?
Iraq was INVADED without provocation and all these people died....Bush shows no remorse or sense of loss for the dead on either side....This is not a Christian reaction, IMO

16. Bu$h is not a Christian
He talks-the-talk, but never walks-the-walk. Bu$h uses Christianity, just like he uses other institutions and people. It is congenital. It is the Bu$h family way. The evil Bu$h family way.

13. It was the evening last summer I met my daughter's future father in law
(the wedding's in June and I have to be with this man again). He said "we need oil and can't help if these people are sitting on it" and as far as GI deaths "we can afford it; hell, they lose this many GIs during peace time in accidents, etc." "It's great what we're doing---it's to send a message to those Arabs all over the place not to mess with us and I agree", blah, blah. People began to leave the table after awhile because it got bad between us. Future son in law said "I knew this was going to be bad when I put you two together"!! Wife is an educated professor and a wonderful woman. He's a college drop out (1 year)who went through contortions to get out of being drafted into Nam war and he has a good landscaping business that was built by his immigrant father and where he finally worked after losing lots of jobs because of drinking. Actually, I can see why he admires Bush---they seem to have similar bios.

17. How old is your future son-in-law?
If he's in the "draftable" age range and/or he has some "special skills" our Army needs, he'll be wearing a uniform by this time next year. You might want to mention that to his father and ask him if he feels his son is as expendable as the other GIs.

14. Hey, gotta respect him
Edited on Wed May-05-04 09:30 PM by krkaufman
Hey, I gotta respect him for at least understanding the *real* reason for the war. Sounds like he's bought in to the basic premise of the PNAC neo-cons (i.e. ultra-conservative reactionaries).

On his saying that, though, did they have to rush you to the hospital to repair your hernia? I'd have dropped to the ground howling on hearing that -- within just a few sentences of his accusing you of being un-Christian for loathing The Chimp.

Yes, loathing a person for their destructive behavior is more un-Christian than murdering for oil. 'Cause it *is* murdering if we're truly there for the oil, since "lower gas prices" doesn't exactly fall into the category of "imminent threat to national security", making his Iraq folly illegal -- aside from asinine. And once we've tripped the "illegal war" trigger, your neighbor can add another 10,000+ counts of murder to *'s rap sheet, as well, for every Iraqi killed (civilian *and* military).

Not that your sociopathic neighbor will give a shad; it's a matter of faith for The True Believers. Think of their "faith" this way... for many, their belief in God and "deep faith" help to justify the inequalities in the world, especially where it allows them to oppress those whom God has ordained as lesser beings.

And then some are just greedy bastards.

28. "I'm a thief. I'm a liar. There's my church, I sing in the choir."
Bridge from "Do the Evolution" by Pearl Jam.

I think this one simple verse describes your neighbor to a tee.

Another one from the same song probably fits as well:

I'm at peace with my lust. I can kill 'cause in God I trust.

The only word I have for outlooks like this is ABHORRENT. There's no other way to describe it, and there's no reasoning with it.

30. Well, at least they're starting to accept the truth...
First, it was Saddam had WMDs
Next, it was Saddam was a bad man
Then, it was liberate the Iraqi people

Now, it's the oil...

Finally, Freepers are accepting the real reason we're in Iraq. "Acceptance" is a positive sign. Now comes "change"...

But his "blood for oil" attitude is unsettling...:grr:

32. Jeez...
...people like this make me glad that I am not a Christian.

I have asked my father, a born-again Christian, how he can support the Chimp when the Chimp believes that killing Arabs for oil is justified. I asked him where in the Bible does it say "Thou shalt not kill except if the guy who runs the country might have Weapons of Mass Destruction?" I have yet to get an answer.

My father used to be, what I would consider, to be a good Christian. He was humble, self-deprecating, charitable, loving, hard-working...he put a lot into his Christianity. Ever since the Commander-in-Thief took over, my dad has become so narrow minded. The really weird thing is that he is a Vietnam vet also although, since Dad was on a sub, he did not see much action (maybe this accounts for the disparity between my father's attitude towards the current war and most Vietnam Vets' reaction to this war).

How come otherwise reasonable people have become so psychotic over this freakin' administration?
