'Nightline' ratings up on war dead broadcast

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC's "Nightline" telecast with the names of Iraqi war dead last week drew a bigger audience than usual for the late-night newscast.

Friday's "Nightline" had a 4.4 household rating in a measurement of the nation's largest media markets, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research ratings. That was up 22 percent from the previous Friday.

The rating was up 29 percent from other "Nightline" telecasts during last week.

4. I thought the show (nightline) was a truly moving piece of jounalism.

Talk about a news reality show! It doesn't get any more real than death. To see the kind and young and occasionally older soldiers faces who have died was truly moving. To call this anything but a tribute is truly sad... and to sprinkle it with politics is as inhumane as the deaths themselves.

every so often, stuff happens and America watches it together on the tv screen.

IMO, it was a humble and fitting tribute.

And Catwoman pointed out that the Nightline was the show that cut its teeth on Iran Hostage Crisis back when.

he might have done the right thing that night, but he is so misguided.
he was horrendous to Franken saying he was opposed to "political stations"
You see, he, after coviring up the stolen election and cheerleading for the war, Koppel still somehow thinks he is "above politics". Go figure.
I am glad a good number of people watched that show. very sobering experience - even for me, who was already opposed to war.

Executive Order 13303 went unnoticed outside the government until July, when it was spotted by the Institute for Policy Studies, a liberal think tank.

Resolution 1483 provides immunity only until the first point of sale, Executive Order 13303 appears to give immunity from extraction to payment of taxes, according to some advocacy groups and legal experts. There is no time frame in the order. In the case of an oil spill, Resolution 1483 does not protect from a lawsuit, while Section 1 of the executive order states that any "judicial process is prohibited, and shall be deemed null and void." According to Devine, this removes any enforcement for civil and criminal liability with respect to protected activities covered by the executive order.

"EO 13303 waives the entire system of administrative law under Federal Acquisitions Regulations for government contracts," Devine wrote in his critique of the order. "It cancels liability for civil fraud in government contracts under the False Claims Act … the nation's most effective anti-fraud statute. In short, the EO is a blank check for pork barrel spending."

Advocacy groups say the administration needs to change the language of the executive order if it has other intentions. "This executive order can only be read to cancel the rule of law for the oil industry," Devine said in August. Jamin Raskin, a constitutional law professor at American University, echoed Devine's concerns in comments to the Los Angeles Times, saying the language "seems to destroy the prospect of any enforcement of civil or criminal liability." He suggested the executive order may go the way of the administration's military tribunals, which were sharply refined by regulation after public protest.
