Apparently we've found Saddam's WMDs
Of course this is from some website called insightmag.com, so I don't buy it...but what if this info were being suppressed for use at a later date? Of course that would require cooperation of too many people...

Investigative Report
Saddam's WMD Have Been Found
Post April 26, 2004
By Kenneth R. Timmerman

New evidence out of Iraq suggests that the U.S. effort to track down Saddam Hussein's missing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) is having better success than is being reported. Key assertions by the intelligence community that were widely judged in the media and by critics of President George W. Bush as having been false are turning out to have been true after all. But this stunning news has received little attention from the major media, and the president's critics continue to insist that "no weapons" have been found.

In virtually every case - chemical, biological, nuclear and ballistic missiles - the United States has found the weapons and the programs that the Iraqi dictator successfully concealed for 12 years from U.N. weapons inspectors.

Hmm, "story not found." I wouldn't trust that website. It looks extremely biased. Just look at the poll on the right-hand side of the page.

Seriously, if we found WMD in Iraq, it would be all over the news. I can just imagine all the crowing and I-told-you-so's we'd have to put up with... t'would be quite sickening.

Edit: Heh... AZ beat me to it. ;)

9. Consider the site's current poll question and allowed responses
Obviously a Freepish site. Just check out the current poll question and the allowed responses...

What will be the long-term effect of the photos showing abuse of Iraqi prisoners of war?
    1. Virtually none because the incident was an anomaly.
    2. It will undermine all the good will Americans had built up in Iraq.
    3. It will prove disastrous to the war on terror.

Yes, those are the only 3 possibilities. Please.

A very quick review of the available options:

(1) the incident was an anomaly It was *not* an anomaly; the Feb review completed by Major General Antonio M. Taguba concluded "the institutional failures of the Army prison system were devastating." Besides, an anomaly -- or rumor or propaganda -- can be just as damaging as a rumor or a systemic problem. The only thing that will affect the long-term perception is what is done once the issue is identified/exposed.

(2) it will undermine all good will we've built up HUHWAH? What war are you watching? Please tune to any channel other than Faux News. Any goodwill present after the overthrow is now outweighed by ill feelings over the occupation and aggressive methods employed.

(3) It will prove disastrous to the war on terror. Yes, but only marginally moreso than the invasion and occupation of Iraq, itself, and the prejudicial siding with Sharon on his recent "peace" maneuvers. Exposure of the abuse issues can easily be used to extinguish any increased dissent, by openly addressing the charges and holding to account ALL of those responsible -- from the foot soldiers, to the interrogators, to the officers in charge of the prison system. Exposure of the abuse issues will only become "disastrous" if the investigation is handled poorly, if suspicions and questions are left unaddressed.

10. I don't have faith in the public
I don't have faith that the public views this war as the wrong thing to do at its core. I believe, as you say, that the public is evolving to the opinion that it isn't worth the cost.

That's my dilemma... The public is still viewing this war on a sliding cost/benefit scale, rather than seeing it as misguided in its basic premise.

Wouldn't a necessary and just war be "worth it" regardless of the cost? If we're even asking whether the relative "benefits" of the war are worth the cost, doesn't that indicate that this was a war of choice and not necessity?

Here's a copy of the e-mail I just sent to the author of the article.

Re: Saddam's WMD Have Been Found

Nice try, but your contentions fall flat on their face with a bare minimum of knowledge and reason.

1) What Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld PROMISED and told us they KNEW we would find, have not been found. There has not been discovered one single WMD WEAPON.

2) The controversial longer range missiles were being destroyed under UN supervision. Proving that the UN inspections program was working.

3) For an unprovoked attack, invasion, and occupation of another sovereign nation, calling agricultural chemicals weapons “precursors” is just not good enough. Morally, starting a war requires a higher threshold of evidence.

4) For a country like the US that believes in the rule of law, it is ethically and morally hypocritical to participate in the UN Security Council process, then when it is not getting exactly what it wants, go outside the rules and do whatever it wants ... Then retrospectively claim it was just enforcing UN mandates. That is a recipe for global chaos. The Security Council did not approve a second resolution, it did not approve an attack on Iraq. Consequently, Bush has made himself and the US an international outlaw nation. The Bush disdain for the Constitution’s requirement that we abide by ratified treaties (like the UN treaty) is something a REAL conservative would find reprehensible.

Jeez ... just face it. Bush lied to you. The UN inspectors were on the ground searching with CIA assistance, so the best available information at the time Bush ordered the attack showed no threatening weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Bush conned you. Deal with it.

Insight is emphatically not a credible source. Believe me, if there was the slightest evidence of WMDs, we'd never hear the end of it in the mainstream press.

Tomorrow I'm going to email Glen Rangwala, Joe Conason and the other lefty writers I like and respect and ask them to address this issue. Whenever similarly ridiculous reports surfaced earlier in the war, they were quick to address it; this one hardly seems to have gotten noticed (but IMHO it needs to be).
