Has the Patriot Act assisted in capturing even one terrorist?
If not, then why should the civil-rights back-breaking powers in it be extended? Why should even more rights be taken away with passage of Patriot 2?

If the Patriot Act has done anything to make this country safer, I would like someone to point out how.

1. Because those who control the levers of power want civil-rights-breaking
powers so they can be unleashed on the enemy, that is anyone with the temerity to be against them/their policies/their actions/their pre-emptive wars.

3. I feel safer
Since Tommy Chong can no longer sell sections of autographed plastic pipe that can easily be converted to RPG launchers.

4. Separate it out
"The Patriot Act" is pretty big. Some provisions of the act are common sense measures that do indeed aid legit investigations. Other provisions are offensive and un-American expansions of government power. The whole idea of lumping it all together is what the Republicans want--you're either for the whole package or against the whole package. We shouldn't look at it that way. It's a series of measures that need to be weighed individually.

5. It's a load of unecessary HORSE HOCKEY...
...that we didn't need in the first place.

We were supposed to be BETTER than our enemies; all we did was prove that in the end we are cut from the same bolt of cloth.

6. Against the whole package
I'm against the whole package, then. It was passed without being read, which can never be justified. No existing legislative tools were examined before it was passed. The problem was not analyzed: it was not for want of sneak and peak warrants that 9-11 occurred.

If a piece of legistlation about increasing security on ferry boats or whatever needed to be passed, then by all means, debate it and pass it and sign it.

It was also passed before we had an idea what actually occurred on 9-11. We still don't know what occurred.

The PATRIOT Act is a non-negotiable for me.
