So, BC DUers...a general strike looms - your thoughts?
Edited on Sun May-02-04 07:24 PM by HEyHEY
I think this should be an interesting couple of weeks. Will Gordo and his and of assbags flee? Or will they take this chance to legally bust every BC public union?

1. Hi HEyHEY My wife is a Cardio Tech & a 20 year HEU member

We have a 3 year old daughter & a boy on the way. She works very hard under a lot of pressure for the money she earns. They want to cut her salary & benefits by 15% so she would be making what she made 15 years ago. In addition they want to make this cut retroactive back to April 1. So she would have to pay money back that she has already earned.

They are literally taking food out of my daughters mouth. We've been walking the picket line for 5 days all three of us. If they get away with doing this to HEU then all other Unions in B.C. will be next.

I can't even begin to tell you how angry we are at this "Liberal"
Government.

2. That retro-active thing is just over the top
It's a political ploy to try to curry favour with privatization hardliners.

3. Please inform me of the details?
I'm in Missouri and don't really get much British Columbian news, but the prospect of a general strike interests me. It has been a LOOOONG time since we've had one here in AmeriKKKa. Can I expect something like Seattle 1919?

4. well.......
Well, the BC government who go under the lying name "Liberals" are in the process of trying to Unionbust the entire province. Currently they are focusing their aggression on the Hospital Employee's Union. They envoked back-to-work legislation which forces the union to take a contract that would see layoffs and a 15 per cent pay cut.
Needless to say the other BC unions are pissed..school is cancelled tomorrow as the teachers are on strike, and the ferries are out too.

SHould be really interesting this week.

7. Details

Our current much hated quasi "Liberal" Government is trying to break the Unions in this beautiful Province.

They have started with the HEU Hospital Employees Union & are demanding that all HEU members take a 15% wage & benefit roll back.

Tomorrow the BC Teachers Union the Forrest Workers Union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Transit Union & most other public sector Unions are going to bring the Province to a stand still and the Government to it's Knees.

Together we stand Divided we fall.

Were standing together. The "Liberal" Gov of BC has a ShitStorm of its own making coming down on them.

They are Liberal in name only they are actually a motley mix of ultra right conservatives and very small L Liberals.

They are considered the worst Gov in BC history . Since taking power they have cut every public service imaginable & raised taxes & user fees. They are also very busy trying to privatize all public services and Companies. This is not what they Campaigned on & the average British Columbian is ready to eat them alive.

This an example of the types of cuts they propose a service that provides books on tape for the blind. It would save the Province approximately $200K a year. Fortunately this was so abhorrent to most BC'ers that they backed down on that one. Fuckers.

Good luck trying to prevent BC from turning into the 52nd state of George Bu$h*'s Imperial AmeriKKKa (the 51st state was Iraq).

5. How the Hell did Gordon Campbell get to be a Liberal?
There's not even lip service to the party's basic reason for existence.
This man is just a west coast version of Mike Harris and we know how successful that model was.
My jaw literally dropped when I heard a 15% CUT in pay.

Unbeefuckingleevable.

8. I kind of wish I was still CUPE so I could walk the lines
Although, my cupe job really was overpaid. But the rest of my work was all fair.

Plus just the chance to Give gordo the finger would be nice.

13. HEyHEY you do not have to be a Union member to walk the lines

Anyone can walk the picket line in support of a Union. Or stop by with some cold drinks and words of encouragement.

Cheers :)

It would be un-ethical. Plus I'll be up there to interview them anyway. Even then , I never let people know my views on the subject.

20. I know what your views are HEyHEY
they're probably the same as mine. I hate this government more than any other right-wing government this province has had. They are so ideologically driven - I don't think they believe in a middle class. They keep talking about the 3 billion dollar deficit - their own fucking fault. How much of a tax break do you get? Cause I don't see too much on my paycheques.

So they get in, they give themselves a raise, then they reward their rich friends with the tax break that really only affects you if you make over 100,000 bucks a year. And then they spend the next three gd years trying to bust unions and trying to turn BC into Lower Slobovia. All this constant talk about how our workers make more than the average across the country. Fucking right - this is the most expensive place to live.

And, in fact, most of the people this government picks on are women. So what does that tell you about these jerk men?

I hope everybody goes out tomorrow and I'm not a CUPE member anymore and I work for a private company, but I support the strikers as much as I can.

Man I hate Gordo and saw one of the signs on CH news: I'm losing my job, while this drunk gets to keep his - with his mug shot. What a supercilious bastard he is. As are the rest of his fascist group.

It's about time we got pissed off here.

14. I've got a wicked cool CUPE bandana some girl gave me in
Quebec during the 2001 FTAA protests as I was choking on tear-gas from a cannister that was fired at me and my buddy from UPS from point-blank range. It says "On the Front Line-- Globally and Locally" and the same in French on the other side. What a cool souvenir! And a life-saver at the time. She also gave me some water. I always hope I'll randomly run into her again so I can properly thank her.

Oh yeah, and I don't know about the rest of Canada, but when the Quebecois strike or protest, they're not fuckin around! Militant unionism and beautiful women, fuck it, I'm movin to Quebec. It's gotta be better than here.

Yeah I love that place...when I lived there it was funny, there was a strike every other week. Actually I was there the year of that huge fracas...left about a month before it all went down, but saw all the setting up of stuff.

17. Hey HeyHey!
I think Gordo will have a hard time trying to bust the HEU, given that so many other unions are walking off the job in support. My take - he'll have to back down.

Gotta love my fellow Canadians! When we get way past pissed off we gang right up on them. I'll never forget when we turfed out Mulroney - and annihilated the Conservative Party.

I'm in Alberta, but to those in BC - shut the province down and make Gordo back off! What an ass!

23. BC - Together As One
Hi,
we are Los Furios, a political Ska Reggae band from Vancouver .

we have a song we are interested in Donating to the current cause.
we're not really sure who we should talk to..

We are currently reworking the Spanish Lyrics ( they are more geared towards Anti-US/Bush ) to reflect the Liberal Chaos here in BC.

you can listen to the song here:

http://www.newmusiccanada.com/genres/artist.cfm?Band_Id=9528

lyrics:
Together As One

This is for the people,
for all the underdogs.
All those caught in the struggle
no money, no jobs.

Cincuenta estrellas de opresion
declarando guerra sin justificacion
y los que sufrimos somos inocentes,
victimas del odio, ignorancia, y ambicion.
Chorus:
Oooh Together as one, together as one
we sing the same song (x2)

So come on raise your glasses
and have a drink with us.
The Sick and tired masses
are all gonna rise above.

Y con esta cancion les vamos mostrar
que si los tiempos se olvidan la musica queda.
Vamos brindar por un mundo sin prejuicios,
vamos a cantar por nuestra libertad...

Chorus:
Oooh Together as one, together as one
we sing the same song (x2)

Stand tall, walk proud
Don't ever let them get you down

Chorus:
Oooh Together as one, together as one
we sing the same song (x3)

you can listen to the song here:
