IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 1, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MISSING SOLDIER DECLARED DEAD

The Department of Defense today announced that Sgt. Ryan D. Foraker, 31, of Logan, Ohio, has been declared dead. Foraker was reported missing from his unit in Guantanamo, Cuba, on Sep. 24. Exhaustive ground, sea, and air searches were conducted in an effort to locate him but were unsuccessful.

Foraker's clothes and personal effects were found near the water's edge, leading the investigating officer, absent any evidence to the contrary, to determine that Foraker had died in the waters of Guantanamo Bay. An extensive criminal investigation uncovered no reason to suspect foul play.

1. The sheer number of crimes by Bush & Co. is catching up with them...
TOO many people know TOO many things. It's becoming too hard to keep a lid on all of it.

4. I wouldn't necessarily judge this yet. I was stationed there 1 year.
The only thing to really do recreationally is spend time in the 85 degree clear Carribbean water, swimming or snorkelling or scuba diving. Virtually everyone does this. There's nothing much else to do, aside from drink, go out to eat, bowl or watch TV in your quarters. It is certainly possible that the guy just drowned or was victim of a shark attack.

That having been said, I never assume other things didn't happen either.

7. His family don't buy it

<snip>"I just don't buy anything the Army has said," Ann Foraker said.

She said the Army representative gave no explanation for why her son was declared dead. Speaking from Guantanamo Bay on Friday, Maj. Sandra Steinberg confirmed the Army has declared Ryan Foraker dead but had no explanation for why.

Ryan Foraker was in charge of transporting and guarding suspected terrorists at the outpost.

His parents say they don't believe he would have climbed down a cliff because he feared heights.

"We still feel empty without him. It's the roughest thing I ever went through in my life," said Carl Foraker, the soldier's father.

Ryan Foraker's wife, Angela, and their daughters, Olivia, 3, and Annie, 15 months, have been out of state visiting family, said Carl Foraker. They are expected to return home for Veterans Day, when the community again will honor the missing soldier.

5. Kind of hard NOT to put on the tinfoil hat
When you hear news like this. Make it look like an accident or a suicide. Shuts 'em up every time.

Except for Vince Foster, that is.
