What Kind of Car do you drive?
I hear that Kerry has gotten a lot of heat lately about his family SUV, which I think is silly.

I know we are all concerned about the environment, so I was curious as to what kind of cars most people drive.

I drive a Toyota Prius...what about you?

Just wondering!! :pals:

2. I drive a beat-up 14 year old Ford Ranger
4 chipmunk model, which will be entered in the Taos Ugly Truck Contest in another 2 years. I use it for long distances and heavy loads, which means I only gas it up every 3 months or so.

For short trips and light loads, I use my other car, an electric bike. It draws a whopping 25 watts at full charge and is a blast to ride.

86,000 miles on it, and about 25 MPG. Yeah, it's sporty, fast and is not the best in gas mileage, but I also live 2.6 miles from work, and walk to the grocers. :D

EDIT: Not my car, just an image of one like mine. Mine's green, and not dented.:P

Edited on Sun May-02-04 12:10 PM by RapidCreek
not pulling a trailor or taking clients kayaking. If I'm doing any of those I drive a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited....which is for the most part a gas hog piece of shit. My Mazda has 186,000 miles on it...my Jeep has 58,000.

That said...I'd much prefer to drive an electric SUV if I could get one.

18. Pretty much in the same boat as you
We have a 2003 Dodge Neon, which gets 39mpg on the highway - my husband drives this to and from work, and we drive it for all errands. I have 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, which I use to haul the kids and I to school, dogs to the vet, etc. Don't really drive it much. I live less than 5 miles from work and the vet. Only other time we drive this is to go to Florida to see my folks- our small car just would not do driving 6 hours with three kids and a bulldog (other dog and cat stay home with neighbors, but my bulldog goes with us everywhere), plus we usually tow the small trailer with bikes and such with us - think my trailer is bigger than the Neon (my enclosed rollerskate).

8. A funky rust bucket...
I own a 1995 Toyota Corolla. Only 83k miles. Slowly leaks oil. I suspect it might be losing transmission fluid. It also makes a flat-tire like noise when I drive it except all tires are properly inflated.

If Kerry needs a SUV for driving on mountain ranges or for moving lots of cargo often ("yeah right" to both, IMHO), then I'm fine with it. But if he's trying to prance like a pretentious peacock...

115. How is the cargo area size?
We have 93 Volvo Wagon and a 98 Toyota Camry. Before that we had an 82 Volvo wagon and an 86 Camry. Since Ford bought Volvo, they stopped making those roomy cargo ones but moved to SUV.

We plan on driving this Volvo until it falls apart which, now that we live in Minnesota may be faster than when we lived in California. Perhaps by then more companies will bring back the wagons.

162. Cargo space is good.
The XC-70 is really a plain old Volvo wagon with a bit of a sporty exterior tossed on it. The wheelbase is a little broader, so the ride is very smooth (in high contrast to my old 240DL).

The cargo area is IMO pretty spacious -- the two back seats fold down to really open it up. There's a net to toss over your stuff to keep it contained, which is nice, too.

Last fall, my wife and I moved her son up to Monterey for college -- all of his stuff plus our luggage, and there was plenty of room to spare.

Pulling anywhere from 27 to 31 miles per gallon. Depends on if its up to Appalachia, or down to Norfolk.

The Bus is my first car. Still drive it. And no, its doesn't have a peace sign drawn on it. Fairly stock.

We've recently realized that we don't really fit in the Lumina either. Been looking at SUV's but they really suck gas. However Ford has a new hybrid Escape coming out at the end of the year. We figure that might be something to look at.

Edit: But, if I did have a car, I'd want a Lambourghini, LOL.

Edited on Sun May-02-04 09:01 PM by Gloria
reason I got rid of is because of my bad clutch leg....

Just computed my mileage today....all in town driving, 27 mpg....
very happy since it has all the power window stuff....(Finally had to give in to that, no choice).

Rated as a low-emissions vehichle, too!

My mother has a 2003 Passat Wagon, 1.8L TURBO which is incredible!
Needed the room for the 3 dogs.

Both had such low financing that we had to do it. Mother traded in a Jetta 5 speed for the Passat.....

OK, I'm sure I'll get flamed for that, but I love my car and this was the last opportunity for me to get a sports car before we all switch over to hybrids or fuel cells. I get mileage in the 20's not too bad. But at least I didn't buy an SUV - didn't want to pay for the gas.

On the other hand, I NEVER drive to work. I always take the train or ride my bike. I figure that's pretty responsible.

at least the parts were, maybe 60-70% at least. There are no more "American" Car Companies anymore, in fact I would say there are no Multinational companies that can claim that title. At best they are based here, and have as much as 80-90% of all operations overseas. It sucks and we need to change it, but only if our government would get off its ass and regulate them.

100. 89' Toyo Van (294,000 miles)
Edited on Mon May-03-04 01:39 AM by Geia
OHOHOHOH What a feeling, Toyota. How I wish we'd make a hybrid utilitarian version of this van. Almost zero problems, push button 4-wheel drive, and room for a party inside with the seats out. From about 200K to 250K I thought she would die soon, but no longer. I think Betsy (as I call her) just might outlive me as I seem to be driving fewer and fewer miles each year. Plenty of power still and only burns 1 quart of oil per 4000 miles (actually burns less, since 1/4 quart leaks from somewhere?).

18-22mph depending on the day of the week, position of the sun, or how many kayaks are on top. Hopefully I'll be biking/walking 95% if I'm able to buy a place in town (just 10-20 blocks from work). But still, I've gotta drive 30mins or so to get to the mountains and I go there often.

'93 Ford Aerostar Ext, best car I've ever owned. Still runs like new.

and, ahem,

'04 Chevy Avalanche, sweet ride, and actually not all that hard on gas as long as you use a light foot. This is Mrs. Ironflange's mid-life crisis vehicle, so she drives it to work.

Gas prices being what they are, I've been driving the Contour a lot more lately. I have considered trading the van for a little roller skate, but I need it for business.

146. No car!
I'm a very proud carless person. I've never had a car. I've lived all over the country in all kinds of places. I've always managed. Too many people drive. Cars suck.

Completely manufactured in in my home state of Michigan, I'm proud to say! Gets high ratings from Consumer Reports and the Car Talk guys.

My dream car is a loaded Subaru Outback wagon but I can't quite afford the one I want.

152. 1965 Chevrolet...
Yeah, yeah, I know, I know...but it gets me there and back again with reasonable expectations. I suppose its not the best environmentally-friendly vehicle, but it has been around for almost 40 years. I figure by driving my Chevelle, I have made it unnecessary to build a potentially gas-guzzling monster to take its place.

My wife drives a 1996 Ford Taurus...

It's a good car, but the a/c doesn't work. Some electrical problem, I've been told. Luckily, I live in Michigan and it's only hot for a couple of months. I have better things to spend $400 on during these days of pay cuts and all.

157. I would be VERY WARY about answering this sort of post
There have been an increased amount of trolls, Karl's Boys, and Other Assorted Bootlicking Bushevik Scum lately.

Undobtedly they are preparing lists as did their Nazis Spiritual Forebears of where to find the Jews, I mean Liberals, when Crunch Time comes.

I myself drive an M1A1 Abrams to work every day. My other car is a Flying Saucer.

people are too naive about the ability to find information on the internet and through public records. SOME folks don't care. Fine.
If you do value your privacy, consider using more caution.

I have a little red wagon and a team of huskies .. wheeeeeeee

169. I am screwed already then: I drive the "Lesbianmobile"
according to Cartalk...

Subaru Outback with a Sierra Club sticker on the back.

I wanted to get a bumpersticker that said "Sorry I missed church on Sunday, but I was busy practicing witchcraft and becoming a lesbian."

However, Michael would have to drive around NC with folks thinking he's a lesbian, so I didn't.

173. My kids hair is so long now he could pass for girl
He has to apply for drivers license soon. I am going to protest there is no check box for other, it only states []male []female. He is a good kid mostly, but mom is going make him trim the hair out of his eyes before he walks in few weeks at his graduation from high school.

Really though I thinking about of giving him my 99 ranger to drive to college while I get one of those high MPG cars from Toyota or Honda.

I would give up my car if I could but my job as truck mechanic on swing shift won't let it happen. There is no bus service at 11:30 pm in town.

With an 8.1 liter engine. Gets about 13 on the freeway without pulling a trailer. I have to have something that will tow a fairly large trailer for business, but only put about 10,000 miles on it a year. I usually try to ride my bicycle to work in the summer.

Yeah, it's an SUV.

Doesn't get great gas mileage.

But, I've wanted an SUV since I was 12.

I also expect that it'll be the last conventional-fuel vehicle I buy, unless I have to replace my '88 Corolla with something cheap. THAT gets good gas mileage!

We also have an 87 Toy van, and a 96 Toy truck. And a 73 BMW with no plates which we want to sell. Not family friendly.

I'd like to sell them all and get a good van with airbags; but hubby doesn't want a car payment.

172. Depends on the job...
2001 F250 with a 6.8L V10 for towing the stock trailer, moving hay, and other heavy lifting.

1988 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a 4 cylinder for daily driver, banging through the woods and what not.

2002 Suzuki XL7 V6 for family hauler.

It's good to have the right tool for the job.
