A loosely organized band of protesters is gearing up for the May 11 public unveiling of plans for Orland Park's first mosque.
Some of the protesters said as many as 100 people could attend the village plan commission meeting to voice their concerns over the mosque proposal.
The 22,000-square-foot prayer center has been proposed by an independent group of local Muslims, including a prominent businessman and several area doctors, for a site at 16530 104th Ave.
The men pushing the plans said the mosque is needed to serve the growing Muslim population in the Orland Park area. Local Muslims now have to travel to Bridgeview or Frankfort to worship, they said.
Kathy Lee, a Wisconsin resident who is relocating to Orland Park, and other protesters interviewed by the Daily Southtown said they are worried about the possible influence of Muslim extremists on the Orland Park Prayer Center, as the planned mosque is known.
"First and foremost, I'm suspicious," Lee said. "What are (the mosque's backers) hiding? What is their real agenda?"
