Iraq torture photos - settle a bet
I'm arguing with some rightwing imbecile about CBS's decision to publish the photographs. According to CBS, they sat on the story for 2 weeks at the government's request. Then they aired it because distribution of the photos was widening, and they feared they would lose the story.

My imbecile friend blames CBS for any negative results of publishinbg the photos. I say they gave the government time to come to grips with the situation, then had to go public lest they lose the story to competition.

Does anybody know exactly how they got the photos, who else had them, etc.?

1. Your story sounds about right. That is what Rather said before
they discussed the story.

2. Tell your friend to blame the FUCKING TORTURERS

Without the torturing, CBS has pictures of a trailer trash woman with a cigarette in her mouth pointing at a wall. That's not terribly newsworthy.

3. I did not get to see 60 minutes, and am late to get to
this story.
But it seems to me that if CBS had this story and these pictures, the only reason to hold them was to follow up on the story as regards accuracy, details, etc.

If they held up on this for any other reason they were negligent in that regard - the government does not require time to "come to grips" with anything.

There are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, and children of our troops who will have a lifetime to come to grips with the fact that they will never see their loved one again. What does your imbecile friend have to say about them?

This was news. CBS didn't create the news, they just reported it. That's what good journalists do.

5. Supposedly the photo first popped up on a porn site
Then CBS held off on showing them for two weeks because the situtation in Iraq was so bad and we were getting ready to go into Falluja.

However, thanks to the Internet the pictures were starting to pop up on other sites, so CBS decided to go ahead and break the story.
