Line Grows for Convention Protest Permits
Fri Apr 30, 6:53 PM ET Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

By TOM HAYS, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - A growing list of potential protesters — including abortion-rights supporters, anti-war activists and even off-duty police officers — wants permission to hold demonstrations during the Republican National Convention, police officials said Friday.

About 17 organizations have contacted the NYPD so far about permits that would allow them to legally march and rally outside the convention at Madison Square Garden and at other sites around Manhattan. More are expected to apply before a June 15 deadline.

Authorities say the applications could overlap and conflict in demands for times and space. One request by an anti-war group has been denied already because the estimated draw — 250,000 people — was deemed too large.

9. That is the spirit.
Can't just stop the per chance congregating of 250,000 people?
We do have the right to association,I hope. Who needs a permit.

6. A reminder
Amendment 1: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

10. Could this become a 1968 Chicago?
At least with the thugs holding billyclubs and riot shields...

<snip>
"What happened in Chicago in August of 1968 changed our political and cultural institutions, and so it shaped our current political and cultural life. If we understand Chicago '68 we will understand not only a major event in our history but we will also better understand who we are now.

For the Democratic party, Chicago '68 doomed the candidacy of Hubert Humphrey and set off shock waves of reform. For the Left, Chicago '68 hastened the demise of SDS and intensified the revolutionary fervor that would spawn street violence and bombings. For the media, Chicago '68 created a deep suspicion of the state and its minions. For Chicago, Chicago '68 weakened support for the last of the big-city bosses and fanned the flames of political reform. "
