No Budget Deal Would Be a Republican Headache-Analysts
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional Republicans face an embarrassing fight over the nation's rising debt before the November elections if they fail to agree among themselves on a tax-and-spending blueprint for next year, analysts say.

The government's debt -- the accumulation of budget shortfalls -- is expected to bump up against its $7.384 trillion limit sometime this summer, meaning Congress must take measures to raise that limit to ensure the debt will be paid.

"It will be a very nasty debate over tax cuts and fiscal policy which they'd (Republicans) like to avoid particularly right before the election," said Bob Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan group that campaigns for fiscal responsibility.


"It could come up this summer. It could be very well timed for the Democratic convention. You can imagine the speeches."
