Political accounts climb the best-seller lists

By Bob Minzesheimer, USA TODAY

snip

Next out of the gate: The Politics of Truth by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, which arrives Friday.

After Bush's assertion in his 2003 State of the Union address that "Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa," Wilson disclosed that at the CIA's request he visited Niger and found no evidence to support the rumor of a uranium deal linked to weapons of mass destruction.

Later, someone in the administration disclosed the undercover status of Wilson's wife, CIA operative Valerie Plame, to columnist Robert Novak. Wilson calls that retaliation. His book is subtitled Inside the Lies that Led to War and Betrayed My Wife's CIA Identity.

His publisher says he'll name the source of the leak, who is the subject of a White House investigation. Wilson has a full round of TV interviews scheduled, starting with Dateline Friday, Meet the Press Sunday, Today Monday and Larry King Live Monday night.

9. Rove is likely hoping for fratricide among the many exploding scandals.
And if ever they wanted to dump something amidst the hoopla, the next few days are choice.

Bush/Cheney appear hand-in-hand before the 9/11 Commission on Thursday. Howard Stern has officially renamed Thursday as "Bring Your Chimp To Work Day," and we all know the political cartoonists are having a field day.

And... you know, Friday is April 30th. We'll be heading right into the "Mission Accomplished" Anniversary Weekend Media Blitz. Those aircraft carrier images, shown split-screen against current Fallujah and Najaf urban warfare footage, are going to give Americans some serious heartache, and the Bushies some serious heartburn.

The very next news cycle, Friday... Wilson outs the Plame leaker. What if it's Scooter Libby?

6. When is he on Larry King?
Today Show, I don't ever pay any attention to, and I'd be surprised to find out there are many who do. MTP is better, because lots of people who actually pay attention to politics watch that.

Is he on Larry King on Monday?

And yes, what happened to 60 Minutes? They had everyone else!

With the Evil Twins appearing before the commission on Thursday, the WH spin corps is going to have it's hands full!

Maybe the truth will manage to slip by the spin police. Let's hope Patrick Fitzgerald (http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/iln/) reads the book!

10. I hope it gets more publicity than John Dean's book did!
Woodward's book release sort of overshadowed Dean's book, which is MUCH more interesting and scandalous!

The bush administration "tail" is wagging the hell out of the dog this week: Falluja, the 9/11 testimony fiasco....I hope Wilson's book gets the notice it deserves!

16. Watch for the next HUGE distraction
It will be the show trial of Saddam Hussein. I expect it will begin this summer and culminate around October. All his crimes will be rehashed in detail. It will be bigger than the OJ trial. Rove has it all planned out. Bet on it.

14. expect a big-ass distraction this weekend. WAR WAR and WAR
I think Bush is starting the fallujah attack again to actually distract people from these facts:

He's "testifying" with Cheney's hand up his ass on Thursday, NOT under oath. I still can't believe they're letting him do this NOT under oath!

And --This book is coming out.

But ohmygosh the war is flaring up and we have to "stay the course" and all of that rot.

20. Scalia is back from duckhunting and ready to hear the Energy Panel case
I don't know when that decision comes down but they are hearing it this week. If they release those Energy Panel papers watch out. I expect they will show assurances to Ken Lay about his pipeline across Afghanistan, and offers to everyone else of Iraqi war. I think all of the Cheney war plans began on that Energy Panel.

19. Won't this prejudice a trial?
I know in Britain that if you accused someone of a crime publicly, especially with details of why you think it's them, before the trial started, it would almost certainly result in the trial never happening - because the prosecution would have effectively been able to start throwing accusations when the court couldn't say what was, or was not, admissible evidence. I know things are a bit laxer (more lax?) in the USA - police reports seem to give out more details of a crime - but a book discussing the whole thing seems to be a gift to any defence lawyer.

Does this mean they've given up hope of any indictments?

21. I would think Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson, Gary Condit
and a slew of others I can't think of right now would prove that's not the case in the US. Though I thing the British rules would ensure more of a fair trial. None of the three mentioned above will have 12 jurors who have not pre-judged. (I realize Condit was never indicted - but where does he go to get his reputation back?)

27. Good point
I always tune out when Peterson is mentioned (why is it such a big case - was one of them famous?), but it seems as if endless speculation has been published. I've tended to ignore the details of Jackson's case too - but I get the impression that there haven't been many specifics of who, what, when etc. (though maybe that's because children are involved) so the jury may hear 'true evidence' for the first time at the trial.

Still, if you think the perpetrators could still be prosecuted after the book, that's good news.

29. Question, question, question....back of the room, waving hand
Wilson is writing a book, not a pamphlet. So, once he says I crossed them by saying what I had to about the aluminium tubes, they outed my wife and here's the guy, there wouldn't be enough to fill a book. So he must be going into a lot more. Does anyone know like what all he's suppose to touch in this book?? How much inside dirt does Joe know???????????

36. How would Joe Wilson know who outed his wife?
I don't mean to pour cold water on this fire, but if he knew, why wouldn't he have said it already?

I really hope this is as explosive as it sounds, but it doesn't make sense to me, unless it's a "here's the only people it could have been" statement, and that's what most of us have been saying for a long time.
