Aug. 8 - Two more presidential campaigns plan to set up New Hampshire headquarters in coming weeks as the state's presidential primary looms less than six months away.
Also volunteers from the DraftGore.com website say they are also shopping around for office space in Manchester. Mac Hathaway, a Merrimack native now living in Massachusetts, serves as the Northeast director for the grassroots groups encouraging to Al Gore to enter the presidential race. Hathaway said they hoped an office would opened by the end of September. Already one volunteer from Arkansas, James Phillips, has volunteered to run the office in Manchester for a month once it's open.
Gore decided last December that he would not seek the presidency for a third time although there has been speculation in recent weeks that he might, and should, enter the race.
Since a candidate's signature is required before their name can be placed on a New Hampshire primary ballot, Draft Gore organizers say they hope to encourage voters to simply write-in Gore's name on the ballot. (Or, jokingly, find another person named Al Gore to sign their name.) On Thursday, in conjunction with a major speech by Gore at New York University, the Draft Gore organization began sending out letters to 147 Democratic chairmen across the state introducing themselves.
Hathaway said that even though his campaign maybe the last on the ground in New Hampshire this year that doesn't mean they are starting out with a time disadvantage.
"The way we see it we have a 3-4 year advantage," Hathaway said. "Al Gore spent millions running for president three years ago and he won. So not only are people familiar with him, but he's actually the incumbent."
