More troops suffering severe head wounds
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 01:20 PM by bigtree
While attention remains riveted on the rising count of Americans killed in action -- more than 100 so far in April -- doctors at the main combat support hospital in Iraq are reeling from a stream of young soldiers with wounds so devastating that they probably would have been fatal in any previous war.

More and more in Iraq, combat surgeons say, the wounds involve severe damage to the head and eyes -- injuries that leave soldiers brain damaged or blind, or both, and the doctors who see them first struggling against despair.

For months the gravest wounds have been caused by roadside bombs -- improvised explosives that negate the protection of Kevlar helmets by blowing shrapnel and dirt upward into the face. In addition, firefights with guerrillas have surged recently, causing a sharp rise in gunshot wounds to the only vital area not protected by body armor.

Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 01:28 PM by Desertrose
our young people would not be suffering these things.

This makes me so furious cause it was so unnecessary...and I hate to say it but so expensive ...this is heartbreaking....Who is gonna foot the bill for these poor guys who can no longer function in society because they gave their (normal) lives for their country?

(How can you post your post with your Kerry logo there? He voted for this- after being in Nam he had to have a clue what our troops would go through. All the more reason he shoulda voted NO!)

Damn this makes me SOOO MAD!

Peace

Bush would have probably gone anyway.

Bush had near *total* support for his invasion from the Republican Party.

7. I support the nominee of my party
I supported Wesley Clark, who was opposed to the war in Iraq. He lost. The voters in the Democratic primaries have democratically chosen John Kerry and that is who I am going to support, no questions asked. I'm not going to demand that he kiss my ass to get my support. I'm just going to supoprt him. For starters, there are more issues than just the war. Second, I am of the opinion that he will likely bring the war to a close. I happen to think that he is just saying a lot of pro-war stuff to get elected and becuase he has to to appease the corporate media and the wishy washy centrist voters. Once he gets in there, it a different ball game. I also think it likely that foreign leaders will be more likely to assist the US in Iraq in a Kerry in Iraq. I'm not interested in winning arguments. The objective is to evict Bush, and I will vote for Satan Incarnate if I have to to do that.

8.  dumb question
Why can't (or won't) someone introduce a bill to
stop the war and bring everyone home?

Money for rebuilding would be separate issue
and NO money to go to US companies.

10. their armor is so good now
that torso shots that would have killed troops ten years ago now leave them wounded. Before you would never have known about the head injuries because the soldier would be dead.

Not much you can do about armoring the face or protecting against massive concussion.
