The new Bush-Cheney attack ad is over-brimming with LIES. Disgusting.
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 02:44 PM by VolcanoJen
They just showed it on CNN's Inside Politics, and it's the kind of stuff that will make you squirm.

I mean, it is truly the creepiest thing we might see this campaign season. I'll do my best job of transcribing it, for those who haven't seen it yet. SEE HOW MANY BLATANT, MISLEADING LIES YOU CAN SPOT IN THIS AD.

AD OPENS with a shot of a relatively deserted, smoking desert battlefield, after the battle has happened, with all kinds of computer-graphic war aircraft swooping over the desert. It's creepy, and chilling.

Voiceover: As our troops defend America in the war on terror, they must have what it takes to win. Yet John Kerry has repeatedly opposed weapons vital to winning the war on terror. (Computer-graphics of the "ghost weapons" swoop into the battlefield, implying that if Kerry had voted differently, lives would have been saved) Bradley Fighting Vehicles. Patriot Missiles. B-2 Stealth Bombers. F-18 Fighter Jets. And more.

Kerry even voted against body armour for our troops on the front line in the war on terror. (Shot of soldiers carrying casualties off the battlefield) John Kerry's record on national security? Troubling. (Shot of shell-shocked, lone soldier, turning away from the battlefield where his brothers have fallen, and toward the camera).

1. What do you expect?
These people will do ANYTHING to secure their dictatorial hold on the American people.

ANYTHING.

See 9-11.

9. exactly. what do we expect?
A Bush ad to tell the truth?

"After stealing the Presidency, Bush destroyed the economy, trashed the Bill of Rights, allowed terrorists to attack America, and then started a war of choice against a country that didn't threaten us. But hey, you might as well vote for Bush. Diebold's going to give him your vote anyway."

4. Excellent rebuttal... but...
I'm thinking of the sheeple, and the images in that ad are what they're going to remember. It's a disgusting distortion built upon the backs of dead soldiers, but you know the sheeple.

I don't need a lecture about superior, sneering attitudes and where they've taken Democrats through the years. I'm talking political strategy here, and if Rove knows what the majority of disinterested Americans wants to hear and see, I think we'd better start paying attention ourselves.

So now we can't even shorten that down to sheeple on DU? C'mon aquart. You know whose side I'm on.

sheep: one who is easily swayed or led

13. A direct rebuttal ad is therefore a must.....
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 02:58 PM by benfranklin1776
.....say sixty seconds, half devoted to directly answering the lies and half devoted to the real Bush/Cheney record as well as bombarding major media outlets to expose the distortion.
Junior banks on the Goering technique of lying loudly and often enough so that distracted people will believe it. A hard, direct, rapid response body slam with a massive dose of the truth is what is required in this instance.

The facts About Cheney's Cuts To Key Military Programs

Desperate to Distract from President's Failed Record on Jobs and Security, Bush-Cheney Unleash Misleading Attack, Says Kerry Campaign
http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=127-04262004

Cheney Proposed Cutting Weapons Programs That Were Important to Success in Iraq. In 1990, Cheney proposed cutting 90 C-17 Air Force cargo transport planes and 14 B-52 bombers. Cheney also sought the retirement of two Navy battleships, two nuclear cruisers, and eight nuclear-powered attack submarines. In 1991, Cheney scrapped the Navy's A-12 Stealth attack plane, a fighter that was proclaimed to be a key part of the future of navy aviation in advanced stealth technology. (Newday, 2/5/91; NY Times, 1/8/91; Boston Globe, 4/27/90; Boston Globe, 1/30/90)

C-17s and B-52s Vital to Operation Iraqi Freedom. According to Defense Daily, "From January through mid-April C-17s in the Central Command's Middle East theater of operations conducted 2,600 missions, carrying more than 23,000 personnel, and more than 73 million pounds of cargo." An analysis by Anthony Cordesman at the Center for Strategic and International Studies showed that the Air Force B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers dropped nearly two-thirds of the total bombs in the war. (Defense Daily, 5/21/03; Copley News Service, 7/3/03)

Cheney Cut Thousands of Active-Duty, Reserve, and Civilian Forces. In January 1990, Cheney banned the hiring of any new civilian personnel in the Defense Department through the end of September, which left more than 65,000 jobs vacant. Under the budget proposed in 1990, the Pentagon would have reduced active military personnel by 38,000; selected reserves would have fallen by 3,000. The budget called for the deactivation of two Army divisions. Long range, the Pentagon planned to reduce its work force by 300,000, including about 200,000 military personnel and 100,000 civilians. In 1991, he called for reduction of 200,000 active and reserve military personnel over two years. In 1992, Cheney called for cutting 500,000 active-duty people, 200,000 reservists, and 200,000 civilians over five years. (Minneapolis Star-Tribune, 2/2/92; Chicago Tribune, 2/20/91; 1990 CQ Almanac, p. 672; Washington Post, 1/13/90; Boston Globe, 1/30/90)

Reserves Being Used at "Unprecedented Rate" in Iraq. National guardsmen and reservists will soon make up 40 percent of the total U.S. force in Iraq. Reservists are being used at "unprecedented rate," according to Lt. Gen. Steven Blum, chief of the Army National Guard. Tasked with homeland security missions and combat rotations in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of the part- time soldiers mobilized in the first days after September 11 have yet to be deactivated. An internal Army National Guard survey of 5,000 soldiers in 15 states recently presented a disturbing forecast: The rate at which Army Guard members leave the force after extended deployments could nearly double to 22 percent. (U.S. News & World Report, 2/9/04; Chicago Tribune, 2/9/04)

6. Yes, yes! But... what about the images in that ad?
I mean, they were using computer graphics of "ghost weapons" that could have saved the lives of soldiers, depicted relatively dead on the battlefield... those soldiers are dead because of JOHN KERRY!

Don't ya geddit?

Seriously, the rebuttals on the voting record are excellent and certainly make sense to intelligent, well-read folks, but the sheeple are going to respond to those images, and the Kerry folks need to call "Bullshit" on Bush using imaginary dead soldiers, in addition to real dead soldiers, to help push his re-election along.

18. Bush isn't speaking, surrogates are
Perhaps Kerry should leave the fire to others like the DNC is doing today in order to avoid being dragged down into the mud.

Possibly a counter ad would do. I wouldn't be too alarmed by the effect on the public. Who knows what they think? Certainly you can't measure that with these biased polls.

5. The Pubs, having nothing else, denigrate a true war hero.
That is disgusting. Then they twist things around to prove their point. Typical Neg Campaigning.
Just what did they vote on that was so correct? Lemme tell you, all the things that fuck up our society, environment, diplomacy, long term Peace, etc etc. Nothing good for America and her future.

These Pubs have nothing to go on so they have no choice but to go Neg. If Gore was Prez, he would have implemented the Hart Rudman reccomendations and there most likely would not have been an attack on the WTC in the first place. Think of what we spent so far cause Bush was asleep at the wheel/

7. Wasn't Cheney the one who proposed quite a few cuts in military
spending??? Wasn't there a post on DU about that? Wasn't there an article about how many lives could have been saved if Bush wouldn't hold back some of the military funding for our soldiers in Iraq? Does anyone have the link to it?

What a disgusting bunch of f*cking liars.

Well, that's at least encouraging. Of course, they probably won't mention this ad again, yet battleground-state voters will see it 18 times a day from here until November.

But... I'm at least encouraged that even MSRNC knows a lying liar when it sees one. :D

26. Good rebutals, but why are we always defending, and not on attack!
If you let the GOP do so, they attack unrelentlessly. They have a pre-programmed, never-ending, constant and coordinated attack machine that is fundamental to their entire campaign. They must get the public to believe that what is false is true, and what is true is false. The only way to do so is with a constant high pitched stream of lies. And they never stop, except when they themselves are being harshly attacked.

It's time to stop this nonsensical thinking whereby we respond to their attacks, after the fact, with rebutting attacks, thinking that when we hit back hard enough, they will stop it and then resort to fair campaigning. Guess what? They will NEVER stop attacking unless they are fending off our attacks, and I am not taling about rebutting attacks. And they will never resort to fair campaigning....NEVER!

The rebuttal info comparing Cheney's and Kaerry's voting record on defense should have been used as an attack and then we could have watched THEM doing the defending. WE need a coordinated non-stop campaign now, and I am talking about full guns blazing with the same type of rat-a-tat-tat coordination as the enemy uses. This is war. You either outfight the other guy or lose.

29. They have NOTHING to run on
NOTHING...the only thing they can do is try to tear Kerry down..that is ALL they will do for the next six months. If it means outright lies, blantant falsehoods, MAKING SH** UP...that is whay they will do. Listen, these idiots can spin that Jesus was a pacifist into "He was a pacifist, which means he opposes war, which means he is not a patroit which means he is a potential terrorist".

If the spin machine fails, they have Diebold to fall back on. I fear for us, I really do, no matter how hard or smart we work.
