Dean will not be speaking due to "unfortunate complications."

Gov. Dean Will Not be Speaking
Due to a series of unfortunate complications this afternoon, Governor Dean will not be speaking at the March for Women’s Lives. The day was otherwise a huge success as Governor Dean joined a Democracy for America delegation of over 1,000 people and a total March attendance of what is being estimated at over 1 million.

All of the staff on the ground (keep in mind they may be a bit biased) claim that Governor Dean was the big draw of the day… stopping people on the street dead in their tracks for pictures, autographs and handshakes.

19. Yes, some people here...
realize that this is about a movement, not a nomination.

20. well...
I admire people who stand up for principle, and try to do so at every opportunity. However, I also recognize that sometimes real life interferes with my theoretical goals and I have to look at alternatives and see if any of them are palatable.

I see this election as if I have been in a desert for 3 years, dying of thirst, and I am dreaming of an icy cold beer.

I now have a choice of Bush, who has said he won't give me a beer, but also will not even offer me a glass of water. Additionally, he wants to pollute the well so that no one else can offer me a drink.

Another choice is Kerry, who won't give me a beer but is offering water and will support my right to move on and find a beer locally.

A third choice is Nader, who says he will give me the beer I dream of, but in reality is a mirage and we all know it.

Do I go for the mirage so that I can die being right? One thing that people have a real problem with is recognizing that there is a difference in being right and being effective.

Yes, you stand up for principles, but you also have to know when the alternatives are reasonable - or at least livable. If my choice was between the beer and water, of course I would opt for the beer - but that is not a viable alternative at this point. I choose to drink the water and survive to fight another day.

23. Ha-ha
I appreciate your analogy. :-) You don't realize that we are totally on the same page. Dean is out of the race. We know that. Kerry is our only realistic choice. We know that. But, we also know that the reason Bush looked even remotely palatable in the last election is because of the rightward drift of the democratic establishment. We know that if we don't keep the organization and inspired momentum we gained from the Dean campaign going, we may lose our last chance to swing the Democratic party, and the nation, away from the rocky, beer-less, shores, of the far right. That's why we we can't afford to shut-up about this movement. But, of course we are voting for Kerry, but we need to vote for him within the context of our greater, long term, goals, which include:

1. Recruit and encourage progressive candidates to run for office at every level. We will help them find the resources to campaign successfully with small donations from grassroots supporters, to begin to break the stranglehold special interests have on the political process.

2. Raise funds for Congressional candidates for whom financial support could be the key to winning, and whose election will be key to winning back a House of Representatives that has become the tool of the Republican right wing.

3. Develop strategic partnerships with other progressive organizations to maximize resources for candidate recruitment, training, and organization.

4. Build relationships with other political initiatives to focus on the failed, destructive policies of the Bush administration.

5. Harness the power of the Internet to enlarge and support our grassroots organization committed to taking back America from special interests that control the right wing leadership of our Congress and the White House.

Really, though, check us out. We won't bite (not you, anyway)

27. And you're so thirsty that you make fun of the
man offering the beer. You love the fact that the man who offered the beer didn't get the nomination.

How THIRSTY of you.

9. Well, he made the ad with Kate Michelson, said he would be speaking.
I seriously doubt it was his fault. He was there, as Blitzer interviewed him from the stage.

This is seriously odd.

14. Maybe his life was threatened!!
Rove and Asscroft, Hughes and Bandar are becoming invisible today with the overwhelming turnout of 1,150,000 people who KNOW that Bush Knew, and who KNOW that the Bush policy's threaten to silence all civil rights.

21. No, if his life were threatened he'd put on a bullet-proof vest and speak
as he once had to do in Vermont.

I think he didn't speak because the powers that be in the DNC thought Dean's speaking would make Kerry look bad for not appearing at the march.

Which shows just how much of a team player Governor Dean is.

How wish I wish Dean were our Dean candidate.

Dean and Kerry couldn't agree on the timing or message or both.
