Saudis interfering in our elections

Woodward's book mentions that Saudi Arabia might try to manipulate the results of the 2004 US election, by driving down oil prices before the elections.

And this got me wondering. . .

Remember how gas prices shot up in the months before the last presidential election?

What if that was a deliberate effort by our "friends" the Saudis, to install their puppet as our president?

How would I do research into this?
