A little about Air America Radio
I was in Chicago yesterday for a Cub game, so I decided to tune in AM 950 to listen to AAR on the radio. It is a low powered station, apparently, because out in Naperville it didn't come in very well. Are all the radio stations in the network this low powered? I mean I can get three or four AM stations from Chicago here and I live about three hours from Chicago. It seems that if AAR had stations with more power, they'd have a few more listeners. Oh, while I was sitting there at Wrigley Field, a pair of young ladies said they listen to AAR from time to time on 950. So there are at least two listeners in Chicago.

2. 1000 watts
Compare to the 50,000 watts WLS-AM is allowed to broadcast.

6. WLIB in NY...
is low powered, and has to cut the power after dark to avoid interferance with other stations. Same with WNYC, the local NPR station.

7. Come on people, do you know how hard it is to get a new FCC kHz?
They only hand them out every few years.

All of the BIG networks Clear Channel and Infinity own most of the stations.

It is HARD to get into this business, it will be 3 years or so before they start to return enough money to lobby the FCC for their own stations.

9. I Listen All The Time
The only two AM stations i listen to are AAR and The Score. I'm almost 50 miles from Chicago and it comes in fine where i'm at. I even listened all the way to and from Kanakakee when i went shopping Saturday. No problems at all.

Could be the transmitter is aimed south or something, but i've driven to corporate HQ on the north shore and heard it just fine all the way up there, too.

So, not sure why you were struggling to pull it in. It's not a high powered blowtorch station, but it's not a ham radio either.

10. Aurora/Naperville *saluting!*
I listen every day out here. In the car, it's better than in the house. Some religious-nut station comes in over it on the house radios...must be a sign. LOL

It is a little strange though that the streaming is an hour ahead of the local, so when I get in the car I get to hear the same thing I just heard.
