and become either right wing or no-wing assholes that resent paying taxes, think they are entitled to huge amounts of money, and don't give back. I think its the money and the sense of entitlement that drives it more than the particular sport.

I would agree that most sports players are ignorant of politics because to be at their level, sports is their whole life.
But quite a few of them grew up lower-middle class and had the hunger to win.
