From My Source in Fallujah-- American casualties actually in 100's
Edited on Sun Apr-11-04 03:06 AM by JCMach1
My student's family reported to him that American casualies are in the hundreds (dead or wounded, it's difficult to say). He also stated that they have fought the Marines to a standstill outside the city. The have met ferocious resitstance from united Sunnis AND Shia within Falluja.

I suspect that may be why we haven't received much information about wounded soliers in the latest wave of fighting.

It is important to note that better theatre health care and transport save many soldiers that would have died in Vietnam (circa late 1960's).

Note, my student comes from one of the most prominent families in Fallujah and would be in a position to know.

I have a sneaking suspicion we aren't getting the whole truth.

His family is fine for the moment. He spoke with them via satellite phone last night.

2. Do corresponding Iraqi casualties fit?

So far firefights have generally cost Iraqis about 10x-15x the number of U.S. casualties, counting guerillas and civilians together.

3. Those may be way too small... people can't get to the hospital...
That's what this 12 hr. ceasefire is about... U.S. repositioning (for God knows what) and Iraqis getting people out and to the hospital.

Current estimates of civilian (Iraqi) casualties will be on the low side.

The fighting was still ongoing last night when he called.

6. better health care, and
better flak jackets that keep the torso alive, with no limbs, where the would have been killed before. hows that for something to look forward to? anybody remember the old cartoons in hustler magazine of the legless homeless fellows? i remember them from sneakin into my old mans stash, and it really hits home now.

8. I could believe wounded in the hundreds, easily
Since the fatalities are in the dozens, and I'd estimate 8 to 10 times as many wounded, that could easily bust the 100 mark.

9. I do not think they let the newsmen in?
I guess it will be one of those news things that comes out very little and months later we will know. It will filler out like your news did.Keep watch on the 'death sites' as they seemed to have seen this from the start and keep posting. As Barbara said 'Who wants to see all those coffins?"

11. Actually, this makes total sense
We've lost close to 60 troops so far this month. When you realize that for every dead there are five or six wounded, that puts our casualties well in the hundreds. The media has had a virtual blackout on the wounded since the war began, occasionally doing a story but for the most part ignoring them.
