Iraq in turmoil 3: By James Cusick, Westminster Editor


When the going gets tough, the tough are meant to get going. But with George Bush and Tony Blair, when it comes to facing the crisis in Iraq, that wisdom does not apply.

As the violence and kidnapping crisis inside Iraq deepened, Bush went to his Texas ranch while Blair and his family went to holiday in Bermuda – leaving Downing Street and the White House both chiefless.

As the two prepare for their summit in Washington later this week, politicians here and in the US questioned their absence from the front line.

The front page of yesterday’s Washington Post carried the headline: Bush’s low profile questioned as violence flares in Iraq.
