Keith Oberman Lost Me As A Viewer
I usually don't watch much cable news because of the bias towards Bush. I heard a few good things about Keith Oberman here and elsewhere so I tuned in tonight.

He interviewed Pat Buchanan about Condi's testimony and I was livid. They ridiculed Kerrey for mistakenly calling Rice "Dr. Clarke" while dismissing his other comments.

Oberman also said there is probably nothing to the August 6 PDB. Buchanan agreed saying it was just a list requested by Bush. Isn't this an outright lie?

Anyway, I turned it off and have returned to my vow not to watch any corporate news.

5. Maybe not . . .
. . .but I am mature enough to know that when an anchor (Olberman) who comes out on our side more often than not says something I might take offense to I don't abandon him. And you wonder why O'Reilly has high ratings. . .grow a thicker skin!

This guy wasn't on our side tonight. If I didn't actually watch the testimony and I only saw this bit of reporting, I would think Rice did a stellar job in front of the commission.

I'm just tired of the lies.

It may be that I don't watch enough TV to know "Oberman is on our side". I've seen his show twice and I posted on something that ticked me off.

Guess I'll go back to finishing "Against All Enemies". I don't need this sophomoric shit from some groupie.

49. Defense
It's not just that Olbermann was picking on Kerrey. I like Al Franken's show even though I think he's not very daring and says some things I strongly disagree with.

In Olbermann's case, it was the smug, self-congratulatory circle-jerk with Pat Buchanan that irked me off. For that, I said wasn't going to watch anymore. What's the obsession with my viewing habits?

I'll probably give the guy another chance if I'm ever flipping through because other posters that I respect seem to value his show.

Kerrey really nailed her I thought, and FINALLY somebody is addressing the fact that our actions as a nation and a government just may have a teensy bit to do with the way the rest of the world views us.

Yeah yeah, I know, I hate America, I hate freedom, I hate Chimp-boy, spare me....

6. You sound like a perfectly mature adult to me
You do not need to grow up. You need to stay angry. It's complacent "liberals" that have allowed our airwaves to be highjacked by the right, with very serious consequences for our country. Such as? Oh just little things like the theft of the presidency, the looting of OUR treasury and our future, and the deaths of thousands needlessly in Iraq. Just little things like that. So don't you dare complain or object when the media whores for *. Someone on DU might call you a crybaby.

8. K. O.
Yeah I saw that a few mins ago.

Hey Olberman is consistently on the money. He is one of the few news people who were taking on Bush even when he was popular. So I give K. O. a pass when he misfires as he did tonight.

I did agree with his point about Kerrey - no one is going to remember what he asked Rice, because of the name thingy. That sucks because Kerrey was RIGHT. But in this media game, as Olberman said, that ain't gonna matter tomorrow.

52. Well, imho he does give his right wing guests an easy time...
...and often interrupts politically liberal talk with his nervous cackling, or simply keeps them off political topics.

That said, I'm glad I caught a little bit of his outspoken appearance on Al Franken the other day. Stewart is absolutely "on our side," but he seems to be under some sort of constraint to be "fair and balanced" on his show.

Actually, Letterman is much harder on Junior Bush than Stewart is. I guess Stewart doesn't want an early retirement.

There was absolutely nothing objectionable about it. They said that Kerrey's comments wouldn't be as likely to be taken seriously because he kept blowing Rice's name. And that's true. It was distracting. It undercut his credibility. They won't be replaying his comments as often, if at all, because it makes no sense when he keeps saying Dr. Clark over and over.

True enough.

As for the second point, judging from Rice's comments, it seems likely that there won't be much in that PDB. And she knows that it WILL come out.

Nothing to get worked up about, any of this.

21. Ya know
when i watch what passes for the news i try not to get personally offended when someone i usually agree with doesnt march lockstep with me that segment. Olbermann has a good show, and you know what, as crazy as Pat Buchanan is, he is sometimes right, not that i agree with what was said in your post regarding the memo but sometimes he nails it. Turn off the tube, take a walk or watch a dvd. my viewing habits have changed alot in the past 6 months, when i do watch the news i keep it to PBS or BBC and then thats it, all done, no more news for me except the morning paper.

I thought this was a forum to express media bias among other things. I did that and said I wouldn't watch the show again. It's no big deal - other than DVDs and The Sopranos, I don't watch television. Some people obviously take their viewing more seriously.

Now I know.

Why don't you let it rest? Are you actually Keith Oberman? If so, I apologize! I love the show! If I didn't have better things to do with my time, I'd watch every night. Bravo!

By the way, didn't you think Condaleeza Rice did an outstanding job today before the 9-11 commission? She sure put that confused Bob Kerrey in his place.

Honestly, there are so many banal threads on this forum I can't believe I'm catching heat for criticizing an "infotainment" show on MSNBC.

39. We newbies have to stick together
I'm a newcomer to DU, and until recently I thought that the members were supportive of each other, even though they obviously didn't agree with each other on everything. I was under the impression that most DU posters knew who the real enemy was. Hint:not other DU posters, and could accept differing views, especially about trivial matters. It's been an eye-opening experience to realize how many Keith fans there are out there, and how strong their feelings are. Maybe this is why we don't win elections? Continue the circular firing squad by all means.

40. It's spelled Olbermann
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:08 AM by scmirage
I'm a Keith fan and I find him to be a very fair man. And he's still better than O'Reilly on ANY night. Just because you didn't like one thing he said is hardly enough reason to completely give up on the show. And he was right--the fact that Kerry couldn't get Rice's name correct did undermine his credibility. I winced every time Kerry called Rice Dr. Clarke. I understand that Kerry was emotional, and rightly so.It must have been very frustrating for Kerry to sit there and watch her lie and spin and waste precious time. And were you actually watching when Keith asked why no one asked Rice about the speech she intended to give on 9/11--the one where she planned to say that we needed to beef up our missle defense systems-that missles were the biggest defense threat against our country-not Islamic radicals?

I wasn't familiar with the guy or how he spelled his name - I just can't stand to watch cable news. Interestingly, I just cut-and-pasted the name from another post here on DU (which is what reminded me of this particularly annoying episode to begin with).

I've been accused of saying something stupid for declaring I'm not going to watch some TV SHOW on MSNBC. I've also been called stupid for buying a hybrid vehicle. I was even once called foolish for refusing to buy a General Electric refrigerator. To each his own. I still find this forum useful.
