Heads up on new talking points from Rush Limbaugh.
On his show just a little while ago, Rush was talking about a speech Sen. Dodd gave about Sen. Byrd on Byrd's 17,000 vote. Dodd said that Byrd was a great man and that he would have been great during the beginning of this country, right during the Civil War and so on. Rush brought up Byrd's KKK record and said Dodd did the same exact thing Trent Lott did with Strom. He then went on to complain about the media was not covering this and the only place you heard anything about this is if you were watching, guess what, Faux News. What are your thoughts and your counter arguements to this.

1. Joe Scarborough covered this talking point last night on his show.
The memo must have gone out after El Rushbo's show ended.

22. Can anyone tell me why ANY of us should give a flying FUKC about what
these morons spew in their daily sewage bilge?

Seriously? PLEASE TELL ME why I need to even think about this?

3. to be honest.
i don't think there is any way to defend Dodd's remarks if you are going to condemn Lott's remarks.

7. First, I'd want to read the transcript of Dodd's & Lott's remarks
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 02:46 PM by comsymp
for comparison & context. No doubt, the glaring inconsistencies between the 2 statements would be readily apparent.

Then I'd have to suggest to ol' Rushbo that he would probably be well advised to avoid calling anybody else a hypocrite... at least until after he pleads guilty at his drug trial and does the requisite time.

But that's just me~

Oh, and one little thing- and maybe it's just the pills which have made him forget, but a 15-hr/wk nationally syndicated radio program sure seems like part of "the media" to me.

10. Bull hockey - Strom campaigned on the Dixiecrat ticket and Lott said he
should have won. Dodd didn't praise him for his KKK involvement - Lott did praise Strom for his segregationist campaign. Huge difference.

11. nonsense! Lott didn't just say that Strom was a great man
he said that we'd be better off if he'd been elected president. That was an endorsement of the platform Strom ran on, which was entirely pro-segregation.

Dodd didn't say something like, "we'd be better off if Byrd hadn't subsequently apologized for being naive enough to join a racist organization when he was 14"

13. You are wrong
"To be honest" - direct that comment to limbaugh. I'll condemn lott all the fuck I want. He's my Senator. He wanted a segregationist to be elected President of the United States and said we'd be better off because of it. Senator Dodd said congratulations to a Senator who made a godawful large number of speechs on the floor of the senate who happened to be a historian relative to the Civil War.

I'll condemn lott and Senator Dodd needs no defending from the likes of limbaugh. This is right wing desperation but it works. The lemmings are carrying the poison forward. "To be Honest" Sheepy, ain't that the truth.

23. agreed.

if you read further down the thread you will see i kind of backed off my original statement.

but i do find it a bit foolish for Dodd to mention the "civil war" when everyone knows Byrd was in the KKK. call me crazy but i think it would have been better to leave out the civil war in Dodd's address. it only gives ammo to the likes of limbaugh and et al.

any public mention of Byrd + Civil War is automatically going to bring up "OMG Byrd was in the KKK".

4. There is no comparison
Byrd briefly belonged to the Klan as a young man, and afterwards said that it was a foolish mistake. For Dodd's remarks to be comparable to what Lott said about Thurmond, he would have had to have said that Byrd was right to join the Klan, and that it was the nation's loss that the Klan's ideology did not prevail.

8. True
i don't really know the extent to wich Byrd was involved with the clan. i guess there is a pretty big difference to being invovled with the clan as a youth vs. openly running on a segregation platform for president.

There's a goddamned rebellion going on in Iraq. If he'd stop popping pills, he'd be aware of that.

15. Saw debate on this on another board.
There is a conservative spouting Rush's talking points on another board for disney addictes. See http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=e34be75baf0412adf0bd775fc293e0f5&threadid=543754 Basically, the conservatives see no difference between Lott expressing regret that a racist running for president on a platform of racial segregation was not elected compared to Senator Dodd's kind comments for Senator Byrd. Senator Byrd long ago rejected the KKK and there is a huge difference here.

18. The reality is bush wanted Lott out of there so he could......
put his guy Frist in. Lott was too independent for bush. Lott would have ridden the story out if he wasn't getting stabbed in the back by the neocons.

25. You're right, Oz.
Lott, for all his sins, worked well with President Clinton and is more of an old school politician who can fight over policy and then socialize with opponents later on. Frist is basically a Bush attack dog, and we've had ample proof of that in the aftermath of the Richard Clarke testimony. Frist made one of the snottiest, meanest speeches I've heard. It was DeLay-caliber hatefulness.

19. They don't want Dodd they want to get Byrd because so many of us love
the guy for speaking out on Iraq and trying to convince the Senate NOT to give Invasion Power to the Chimp. Dodd is just a tool. He and Lieberman gave away SEC powers in '93 which helped further the crookery during the dot.com. bubble. They don't want him, but it's their "eye for an eye" policy to go after Byrd.

They have no shame. To attack that wonderful man. And I don't want to hear that crap about the Klan. We've debunked that here on DU in thread after thread.
