4. Stewart is showing Franken how it should be done. Hysterical.
There is a great symbiosis between the young pup and the mature dog.

John Stewart is pumping quick-witted life into the show that has been missing. If only he were the co-host. I love Franken but he does plod.

9. They have different styles.
Franken has always had a very deliberate pace to his delivery. Stewart is more straight off the top of his head.

I'll admit that Stewart sounds a little better in this format at the moment. Franken is already adjusting quickly though. Franken will be fine.

5. I think Bush is really stupid.
I disagree with Al and Jon, I think Bush is really not an intelligent person. He's not a thinker, he's not a leader, he's a follower. I think they give Bush to much credit, he can't speak on his own, he can't form or articulate thoughts, he's really stupid, but he's like a gang leader...he appeals to street smarts.

No one will just come out and say that he is a moron...they all say that he is "secretly very intelligent"...fuck that. He is a DOUCHEBAG.

Say it loud. FUCKING IDIOT. I will say it. I will say it a few more times....DOUCHEBAG! IGNORANT FUCKING DOUCHEBAG!...

13. I disagree
I think Bush is a lazy-ass with no inclination to improve himself. After all, in his mind, he is the Leader of the Free World and has God's ear, so how can he do better? I do think he is moderately intelligent. He did manage to not embarrass himself when debating Gore in 2000 whereas Gore trounced Kemp & Quayle previously. (I'm sure DU thought Bush embarrassed himself, but in general, most thought he did OK)

Granted, if Bush had not been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he likely would be some faceless middle manager in a large corporation trying to suck up to his boss and hoping to retire a few years early.

He's not very bright. That's why he's made such a great puppet over the last 3 years. He's like Reagan.

20. Bush is stupid on policy. Bush isn't so dumb on Beltway politics
Bush is clueless on all topics of policy, but he's been a Beltway player so long, I think he smarter on playing post-Gingrich cutthroat-Beltway politics.

He's forced the GOP legislators to stay in line and forced his agenda down the throat of Congress. That's no easy task. I'm sure he's doing it with brute force. I'm certain he does a lot of threatening, bribing, pork, etc. He's gotten what he wanted though.

Don't make the mistake of underestimating the enemy.

22. that's "misunderestimating"!

Bush does has a few assets going for him -- he's tremendously manipulative and knows how to use people. He knows when to appear charming and when to freeze people out ... and he's cunning enough to know that with his family name, he can intimidate or bribe people into going along with him. He wasn't attentive or charismatic enough to be "the coolest guy in class" but he knew the tricks.

And also, he can be ruthless. Remember that he was his dad's enforcer on the campaign team in 1988. He actually learned this when he was quite young -- his mom put him in charge of bossing around his younger siblings, in his father's absence. The fact that he's willing to get his hands dirty and be the guy who says "you're fired" meant that he was able to gain a lot of power -- people who were too scared or squeamish to do that would delegate authority to him, and he capitalized on it.

25. I agree with your assessments, Lisa
I think you nailed it on the head. The enforcer routine, and the power he enjoys reminds me of the sparkles in his eye each time he spoke about war.

Another poster mentioned that he thought Bush* is good at the Beltway politics. I don't think he is at all. All that savviness comes from his aides, beginning with Karl Rove.

23. I was listening to this segment and thought the same thing

If there is intelligence in there somewhere, he has never demonstrated it as far as I can tell. The lights are on but nobody's home. I did agree with Jon that Bush talks down to people like little children. I've always found him incredibly condescending.

On edit: chiming in about Al Franken. I enjoy listening to him and tune in every day for the entire show. I think that all of the AA shows and hosts are good in their own right. The different styles and deliveries don't bother me - "variety is the spice of life." :) Just my opinion.

24. Catfight I agree with you
He doesn't have an ounce of understanding of the world in his body. "They hate freedom" is his answer for everything. Lord save us, I am so often embarrassed that this man is the leader of the so called free free world. He talks in a "homey" southern drawl and that is why 45% of the country likes him? Or because he is no smarter than they are and they can imagine it really is possible for they too to be president with their limited intellectual facilities? He appeals to fear and tribalism. He'd do great in Iraq with those qualities, and he has no room for anybody on the other side, "infidels".
