What do we think about John McCain as VP?
Heard this mentioned on TV last night. Interesting idea, if nothing else.

What, we don't have any good liberals or even moderate Democrats to choose from? We have so little faith on our party and our ideas that we have to choose a Republican?

4. I think it sucks
That seemed to be the general DU consensus last time this was discussed.

McCain seems to have integrity - he says what he means and means what he says. But most of his political positions do not fit with the Democratic party.

"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a prolife, free-trading, nonprotectionist, deficit hawk". other than the last two words, can every McCain fan on this board read this so we can FINALLY put the issue to rest? People: MCCAIN IS A REPUBLICAN, no matter how "moderate" he may seem, he's waaaaaaaaaay out of touch with the Dem. base. end of story.

on edit: fixed typo

26. The Democratic Party desperately needs to rid itself of right wing
operatives that are bent on destroying the party from within.

This is probably some idea cooked up by the American Enterprise Institute to assimilate the Democratic Party into the Republican Party.

27. VP Candidate
Hey wait a minute... some of my bush-loving colleagues firmly believe Hillary will be Veep ('cause you know the Clintons are hiding around every corner).

We wouldn't want to prove Rush "can you hook a brother up" Limpballs or Bill "the big blubbering vagina" O'Reilly wrong. Throwing bush out is one thing, but to break their hearts by not electing Hillary is just mean.

There's no way McCain is going to sign on, it's political suicide for him and would prove to the repugs Kerry is wishy-washy (by the way wasn't one of the marks against G. Dumbya in the first campaign his inability to stand on any one issue?).

28. Good publicity to talk about it, stupid idea if they actually did it
It helps Kerry to split the Republicans by letting the media think he might do it. It points out that Bush is unpopular with moderates and other Republicans. That McCain hasn't rejected the idea also helps Kerry be taken more seriously by the moderate voters who Bush is trying to smear Kerry to.

In reality putting an anti-abortion candidate on a Democratic ticket would be fatal, much like running Tony Sanchez-- a Republican-- for Democratic candidate in Texas.

I suspect Kerry understands both aspects of the equation. He's doing it right, so far. He'll pick someone like Dean or Edwards after he's gotten as much mileage out of the speculation as he can.

45. Wrong, no
It looks like Kerry reaching across the aisle to give a voice to a party whose leader is so far out of touch that he does not represent them. That's how people are going to see it. Good for Kerry, good for McCain, bad, very bad, for Bush. Perhaps even fatal. This works as well as Buchanan running in 92.

Now, if McCain were not playing along, if he acted upset by the consideration, or turned off by it, it would look desparate for Kerry. But that McCain is considering it (in appearance, though not in reality. He's not that dumb.) adds credibility to Kerry amongst Republicans.

Kerry's doing a much better than expected job. Watch him work, so far he's doing it all right, even superbly. (That's not a comment on his views or votes, just on how he is campaigning.) He's no Dole, he's the real deal.

Now, if Kerry actually chose McCain, it would be bad. And if he even talks about choosing him, he's going too far. But letting the media speculate is good strategy.

I'm a little distressed with some of you who apparently advocate censorship. I thought we were the ones with the open minds. So easily do we fall in with the freepers.

I'm no McCain fan, but I will reserve the right to think about the idea before I dismiss it and all those who subscribe to the idea.

Ever heard of the concepts of 'intellectual exercise' or 'for the sake of argument' or 'devil's advocate'?

Yes, I have, and I was wondering where in the world you got the idea that the one or two sentences you posted in your original post qualifies as "discussion", "intellectual exercise", "argument", or "advocacy"?

McCain has said that he would not accept, and would not switch parties.

(Rejecting it took me less time than checking McCain's stance on abortion) and wouldn't say I really considered it. I just considered Kerry's strategy. We have to understand strategy and let our candidates use it without being fooled into thinking that's what they are really thinking.

43. is that the "royal we?"
if so, "we" think the idea has been floated as a pr stunt. not sure if it benefits kerry, mccain, bush or nader. since mccain has publicly stated he supports bush, "our" thought is that it gives mccain even more face time than usual. he is kind of a publicity hog, yanno.

here in az, some have a grudging respect for mccain as the maverick bigmouth, but also hold no illusions that he is anything but beholden to his partisan masters.

44. Article on the subject
"There is a sound and simple reason why John McCain should not be John F. Kerry's running mate on the Democratic ticket in November. He is a Republican.

The distinction still matters, even in an era when both major political parties are fixated on the nonpartisan, centrist, independent voters who political consultants insist determine the outcome of federal elections.

Reports that many on Kerry's campaign staff are smitten with the idea of the Massachusetts Democrat naming his Republican colleague from Arizona as his vice presidential choice make for amusing chatter in this long lull between the presidential primaries and the party nominating conventions. It is still a fundamentally foolish idea.

Far from elevating Kerry as a bold, bipartisan thinker, the choice of McCain would enshrine forever Kerry's reputation for political equivocation. The question his campaign has spent months sputtering to answer (what does John Kerry stand for?) would only be amplified by such a selection."
