Activist voices antiwar stance from his new Crawford house

CRAWFORD -- Before George W. Bush became president and began to use his ranch a few miles from here as a second White House, Crawford was little more than a cluster of buildings around a flashing traffic light.

Today, Crawford is an international crossroads, a place where world leaders come to meet the president. Gift shops and antique stores fill the little storefronts, and merchants thriving on the sale of presidential trinkets tell knowing anecdotes about Washington insiders. Nearly every shop window sports a sign that reads, "We support the troops."

So some here are a little puzzled and defensive about Dallas-area peace activist John Wolf's plans to give the anti-war movement a Crawford address.

Wolf, a Quaker who has been protesting U.S. policy in Iraq since the 1991 Persian Gulf War, recently bought a little frame cottage near the center of town. A small purple sign reading "War is not the answer" leans near the front steps.

1. Of course, the terrorist attacks on this house will be written off as
"childish pranks" and "vandalism".

If ever even reported or noticed by the police/media in Austin.

5. Depends which route they take into town.
If you are taking the quickest route, you have to go right by it, it can not be missed. It sits one block off the center of town. Just east of the one stoplight in Crawford.

3. Hard to believe it has been a year.
The Peace House opened last Easter and has had a positive impact (I think) on the town. This last summer the doctor on horseback riding to Washington (can't remember his name), stayed there for several months. Having him there helped residents of Crawford to see we peace activists aren't all a bunch of bare-footed flower children or dope smoking criminals.

Johnnie has done an amazing job working with law enforcement in the town and county. At the rally and march held on the 20th of March there was no trouble. One officer watched a confrontation between a few of the marchers and a couple of "freepers" on the sideline in which a trained peacekeeper moved in to diffuse(sp?) the situation and later remarked, it was one of the best examples of conflict resolution he'd ever witnessed.

Thanks Johnnie, for the courage and example you show us all.

6. To keep abreast of what is happening at the Peace House go to:
www.dallaspeacecenter.org

The calendar is updated frequently. Planning for what is next from the Dallas area taking place next Monday.
