Critics argue promoting wedlock could backfire

Looking back on her life, 44-year-old welfare recipient Patricia Donaldson of Detroit says she wishes she had married.
At 16, she had her first child — and within two years got her first welfare check.
Two more children followed, and, with modest financial help from the three fathers and serious health problems, Donaldson ended up depending on welfare most of her adult life.
“I would have loved to have been married at a young age, but I don’t know if I was ready or not,” she says, citing insecurity and not meeting the right man......
