Janeane Garofolo Show Listening Thread #1
Sam Sedar is using the word "mercenary" a lot at the start of the show.

He says the mainstream media doesn't use the word, because the public would ask too many questions about what is going on in Iraq if they did.

1. He is saying the truth. Good for him.
They are defending Kos, and explaining his views further. Describing why the mercenaries are there, describing the horrible plight of the regular military.

I am very happy they are doing this.

4. FYI Jeneane, Depleted Uranium...

...is used because it's 2 or 3 times as dense as lead. When added to shells, it increases their overall density (and thus mass), so the shells can shoot through tank armor better than conventional shells.

You're right about the health problems with DU, and the fact that it's a danger to soldiers and civilians for a long time after the war. The military could use another super-dense metal that's non-toxic, non-radioactive, such as Osmium or Iridium, and have the same results.

8. it's much cheaper
in fact it's free because it's a byproduct of nuclear reactors, while titanium and other materials are very costly.

9. possibly
DU is a waste product from nuclear reactors, so it may be readily available for the military. Osmium and Iridium are EXTREMELY rare metals in the Earth's crust, so it might be very hard (and expensive) to get literally tons of Iridium and/or Osmium.

Despite what Discovery Channel documentaries might lead you to believe :-) the "Iridium layer" at the end of the Mesozoic is really a black clay with a slight spike in Iridium content, and is completely useless as an exploitable resource (not to mention the military would destroy fossils.....).

5. Janeane mentions Depleted Uranium...
DU is a waste product in the process of producing nuclear fuel and weapons. They found it has a superior penetrating ability against armor (tanks) and vehicles.

When it hits the target, radiological dust is aerosolized and contaminates the area and everyone who breathes it.

DU is a heavy metal and does not degrade very fast. I believe the US Army's own studies show that it is a carcinogen but have squelched the data in order to retain the battlefield advantage of DU ammo.

Robbins and Garofalo don't seem to think that the term "conspiracy" should cause citizens to shy away from exploring how powerful people work together.

Tim Robbins says much of the public supported him during the controversy after the president of the Baseball Hall of Fame uninvited him from speaking about the movie "Bull Durham" to punish Robbins for criticizing the war.

Sam Sedar talks about hyposcrisy that Baseball Hall of Fame president said he unininvited Tim Robbins to avoid "politicizing" the museum, but Ari Fleischer gave a speech there earlier unrelated to baseball.

Tim Robbins says that when he was invited to speak about the Iraq war on tv, he wanted to bring an expert with him, but they wouldn't let him.

Garofalo also says historians and defense experts who were against the war were rarely interviewed. The mainstream media just interviewd anti-war ACTORS to make the anti-war movement look silly.

Tim Robbins talks about Matt Lauer ending interview early just because Robbins said that most countries where the US has gone to war aren't currently democracies, and so creating a democracy in Iraq is an uncertain outcome of going to war there.

Apparently, as Robbins started listing undemocratic countries where the US went to war, Matt Lauer ended the interview early.

29. Regarding the Vulcans....
One point JG et al didn't make was that the Vulcans came to Austin to tutor Bush in early 2000 campaign right after that reporter quizzed him on foreign leaders and Shrub failed the test! It was terribly embarrassing, so the Vulcans showed up in Austin to give the Chimp a crash course in foreign policy.
