ABC doing feature on religious pharmacists
Should a pharmacist get canned for refusing to fill precriptions they are "morally opposed to due to their religion?"

I say yes, because suppose a pharmacist decides not to fill a prescription for insulin, because he "believes" that only prayer should be done for the sick?

1. One has to wonder about Christian Scientists

Say an individual converts to CS after working at a pharmecy. Could they be fired for refusing to fill any prescriptions?

2. Ludicrous "religious freedom" claim.
Where do you draw the line? Someone's religion might be against medications that were developed with animal testing or that have certain animal products in them. You cannot leave this to the pharmacist.

Someone that cannot fill prescriptions as decided by a medical doctor needs to find another profession.

5. If the pharmacist wants to make such decisions,
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 05:58 PM by rabid_nerd
he can open his own pharmacy. Otherwise he listens to the pharmacy owner or suffer the consequences.

Conversely, the parmacy owner, even if not a pharmacist, could decide not to carry something and then fire a pharmacist for filling a prescription against the policy.

Basic boss/employee situation.

I don't see many Amish Taxi drivers around.

6. I already saw a piece on TV earlier about
a religious gym (Christian of course). Are these just nice stories of religious people or are we heading back towards the Dark Ages?

8. Beats me
It was called the Lord's Gym. It had scripture and such written all over the walls inside. Other than stuff like that, the equipment was the same.

9. They should find another line of work.
DOctors, Nurses, and Pharmacists should not be sitting in judgement of people's lifestyles and choices, especially when those choices are legal. If they can't fill legal drug prescriptions, they should be fired and they should go get retraining in one of George's special schools.

10. If you cant keep your religion out of any job you should be fired.
What if someone who works for the gap starts hating sweatshop and refuses to sell clothes. If you dont do your job, you get fired.

11. Pharmacy chains usually have a policy
...on what they will and will not sell. For instance, pious Walmart won't sell the morning after pill, really outrageous! They do sell contraceptives, though.

Any pharmacist who finds himself too pious to fill prescriptions ordered by a woman's doctor needs to find another line of work. He is not qualified to second guess a physician who may have prescribed the medication for a purpose he is completely unaware of. In any case, the ethics of witholding what may be life saving medication from anyone are appalling, no matter which god he blames for his bigotry.

These guys need to be outed, complained about, and FIRED. Let them go preach somewhere. They have no business in healthcare.

14. Are they SERIOUS?
This is the first I've ever heard of this nonsense. Does "Pro-Life" now also mean "Anti-Contraceptive"??? Are these people willing to put their money where their mouths are, and support the costs of raising all these extra children whose lives they think they're saving?

Since when is it even remotely immoral for a MARRIED couple to practice birth control?? What's next, suggesting we should put everyone's lives at risk by outlawing condoms??

These people should stop trying to avoid getting their hands dirty or meddling in stuff that is none of their damned business and get a real life - in the real world where real people are actually TRYING to be responsible.
