Replace Randi Rhodes with Ed Shultz
This guy is far more entertaining to me than Rhodes. Interestingly, his voice kinda sounds like Limbaugh and he reminds me of a smart leftist version of Limbaugh.

Rhodes is rude and she makes me want to tell her to shut up, it is all about her opinions and she sounds like an egomaniac.

4. We get both in Portland
Interestingly, Rhodes was dissing Shultz yesterday, while earlier in the day, Shultz refused to be baited into dissing Franken and air america. I like Randi, but I don't know if it's a good idea attacking allies with the enemy at the gate.

Anyway, I'm glad to have access to both.

5. Yeah right, Ed, the former Republican?
Maybe you should look up his history before you agree to ride his bandwagon.

I'm not saying that some cannot change their mind, but Randi has been consistant.

I think most people that criticize Randi have a dislike for strong women.

Don't freak out, just think about it for a couple of minutes.

7. Why can't there be both?
They both do the same style of schtick. There's room for both of them on the dial.

Why is it that if Ed indugles in it he's a "smart leftist version of Limbaugh." If Randi indulges in the exact same behavior she "sounds like an egomaniac."

I don't understand this. Really I don't.

43. Go and look at Randi's Arbitron ratings.
There's a reason she was hired and Schultz wasn't - she's a ratings winner.

Schultz has had nowhere near the success Randi has had on radio. Not even close.

58. Americanstranger, have you noticed that every time you or I or anyone...
...mentions Randi's stellar track record, ratings wise, her detractors fall silent?

Used to be, someone might say, "ratings shouldn't matter."

Silly statement then, sillier now. Air America isn't NPR. It's survival depends on ratings revenue.

So, people, give it up. Randi is in afternoon drive for a reason. She's successful.

63. Yep.
People don't seem to realize that in radio, ratings are what really matter. And those same people don't realize that Randi was hired, specifically, because the has had kick-ass ratings for the past ten years. Ratings mean money. Money means building the network. Building the network means that in two or three years, people out in the flyover states who are listening over their computers now might be able to go out and get in their cars and hear the network.

There is a reason she is there, and they can't argue with that. So instead, they whine about how 'grating' or 'rude' or 'brash' she is.

NEWS FLASH! That's the reason she got the goddam drive-time show and wannabes like Ed Schultz didn't! And I know for a fact that Schultz was being considered for that slot and was passed on.

So why should AA get rid of the person they figured would succeed in that time slot and replace her with someone who they already decided wouldn't make it in that time slot?

68. I think much of it comes from the attitude that anything commercial...
..and profitable is somehow of lesser quality than that which is less successful.

But like I said, the opposite of Randi has been tried for liberal radio and has hasn't achieved much success.

What is funny is that SOME of these same people decry the fact that Mike Malloy isn't in the lineup but his is just as combative as Randi.

Ponderous! Fucking ponderous!

14. It's because she's a woman
Like Newt said, when a man speaks his mind, he's assertive; when a woman speaks her mind, she's a ball busting bitch.

It's a big, fat double standard, and it bothers me to see people at DU indulging in it.

I guess Randi should just run along and bake some cookies until she learns to be more sweet and feminine on the air.

Forget that! Give 'em hell Randi!

I love women and I love women's voices and I'd much rather listen to a woman talk, or sing, or whatEVER.

But Randi Rhodes voice is EXTREMELY grating. It's very difficult to listen to her, even when I like what she's saying.

If I had to sit next to her in a restaurant, I'd have to move away. I couldn't take it.

She's obnoxious. Has nothing to do with her gender. Get over your OWN bias.

We're talking about banning a certain five-letter word beginning with "B" and ending with "itch", but I have read every generality and slam about strong, intelligent women on this thread.

Am I at DU, or did I stumble into some kind of alternate universe?

The Schultz Shuffle

If you had been watching Ed Schultz's dance card over the last decade, you would have noticed quite a shift. Once adoringly in the arms of Republicans, the talk-show host now waltzes with the Democrats, making him the most notable team switcher since Anne Heche. Here, some of his sharpest moves.

Move 1: Homelessness

Turn to the right: "Yeah, it's cold out, but you'd think these people could figure out how to get out of it. How about getting a job?" - 1993

Now turn to the left:"A lot of these homeless folks are Vietnam veterans. . . . We've turned our back on these people after they gave to the country. What's wrong with this picture?" - 2001

Move 2: Farm Subsidies

Slide to the right:"The American farmer's hat is bent from being stuck in the mailbox waiting for the government check." - 1994

Now slide to the left: "This country can't survive without the American farmer. . . . We aren't just subsidizing the farmer, we are making it possible for every American to purchase food." - 2000

Move 3: Universal Health Care

Dip to the right: "Why should I have to take care of somebody down the street because I am successful and they have failed?" - 1995

Now dip to the left: "The health-care industry and the lack of coverage for millions of Americans has to be on the table. We need a universal package." - 2001

And I know plenty of female liberal voices that I found did a better job at making me nod along and actually giving out INFORMATION without sounding annoying and self important.

Sean Nicks who used to be on KGO was GREAT - She used humor and could corner the most hardcore freeper with ease.

Now that I think about it RR reminds me of a female Michael Savage - and I can't stand that guy but I know a lot of freeps like him.. so..

But, If people like her I have no problem with her being on AA - I just may not listen or maybe I'll eventually get in to her over time. Don't know, but as of now - she just hurts my ears and I don't really see her as a powerful voice.

57. I like both
I like Schultz because he's great radio. But apparently, to some in this thread, you have to be born liberal to be liberal--which is a pretty moronic view to take, but to each his own.

I like Rhodes, too. But she does talk over callers a lot, which can be annoying. And apparently, to some in this thread, that makes me a 'threatened man.'

Sometimes I wonder if we were better off without AAR.

65. No. No. No. Add Shultz to the line-up (along with
Mike Malloy) and keep Randi. I love her.
